Dust Shroom inlne fan dust filters for ac hoods. Any good or ?

Hey guys, just in the process of setting up my new room and was wondering what some of you guys use as preventative measures for dust in your air cooled hoods?

Seen those Dust Shroom filters but they are a little pricey and apparently they are suppose to be installed on the end of the intake. That would mean I would need to install these on the outsie of my house which would look rather silly and suspicous compared to dryer vents( plus they actually say "Horti Control" right on the filters).

I've heard of dudes using pantyhose too. This in theory sounds like it could work but never tried. Anyone here? Likes? Dislikes?

Anything else better?

Pantyhose have a nice fine mesh but IMO they rip too easily.
I use the Hydrofarm Bug Shileds.
They are not as good as a HEPA filter but they are cheap and keep a lot of particulates out.
You might even be able to squeeze them into an internal junction so they are not on the side of your house. It would take some finagling though.
Some stuff does get through so I still need to clean up occasionally.

Here's a shot looking through it.

hmm I wonder if a guy could use regular vaccum hepa filters and and install them in the intake dryer vents installed outside?

Well, off to walmart i go lol. I'll let you guys know how I make out.

ok so this is what I grabbed:

Was only $4.00(cdn) but has to be changed every couple months. I'll easily be able to make 4 outta this. Works out to a dollar per. Not bad.

Rabbi, i also went with the filtrete filters. I lost about 80cfm by covering my 6inch inlet with it. To undo this i took the box i got my wall fan in, stretched the filter over the open end, (about 2sq feet) and ran a six inch duct into the bottom of the box. Foil taped that shit up and taped it to the ceiling. Lights have bedn clean and the room is cool. Keep in mind, if your loosing cfm's you either have leaks or your straining your inline. Less drag leads to a longer lasting fan.

Great tip, thx man.

I use dryer sheets and rubber bands around the intake for my tent. At the end of harvest that thing has a thick layer of dust on it. I'm sure those dust shrooms work, but I'm never going to pay that much for it.

yeah im just gonna stick mine in my dryer vent too. LandscapeEscape made a good point about minor cfm loss but my 6" Osterburgs push 600 cfm's and its pretty much a straight shot(no bends) so I'm pretty sure it'll be fine...will know forsure soon.

K their was enough there to make 8 sheets for my 6" dry vents. can't wait to try it out.

At only 50 cents a piece I kinda like the idea of changing em every two months as opposed to the reusable shroom cap. My front grills on my dryer vents just snap on and off so it'll be a breeze to replace them.

green goo

green goo

i got an 8" dust shroom today, and when i opened it up it had this green gooey, oily shit all over it and in the package, i called the lhs i got it from and they said they were all like that...i wiped off the excess with pt and installed it at the beginning of my run cuz i want it to keep the hoods clear of dust and debris...just thought id post that...

no idea what the green shit was or if i was supposed to leave it on there but i did, but it def looks better than just a hole, i def lose no airflow and it seems to be catching dust already:biggrin:

30x30" box, 25"x25" Furnace filters.
Foil tape, 6" starter ducting and a sharp knife.

Use 2 cheapie filters (around 5$) and a 20$+ high-micron or hepa filter.

Tape all three filters together so the airflow goes through the expensive filter last.

Cut 24" x 24" hole in one side of the cardboard box and foil tape filters in place on the inside of the box, covering the hole you just cut. Be sure you have it facing the correct way... expensive filter last(as in... facing the inside of the box, where the 6" duct will be on the other side of the box).

Cut hole for starter ducting in other side of box. Install ducting and foil tape it up.

Foil tape the box shut, be sure to seal all holes.

Depending on how 'dirty' the air in your area is... the cheapie filters only need to be changed every month or 2. The high micron should last a good 6-12 months, as long as you regularly change the cheapies.

Changing filters is easy with a sharp knife. Just slice em apart and tape on two new ones. :)

I'll breathe room dust all day... really can't stand the taste/smell of it burning on my meds. Ya know?

8" ducting... about 10-20$ for a starter collar, depending on where you live and where you buy it.

*Might* be able to use the same size box and filters... never tried it.

Box: up to 10$ (seriously over-estimating here)

Max $30 for hepa filter, $15 for 2 cheapies

Roll of foil tape $15?

Knife... should have one already...

Total: Well under $70 with 15$ replacement costs every 1-2 months.

Works for me. :)

I started a thread asking for alternatives like these on another forum and got 1 response (unhelpful). Wound up buying a 6x12 phresh filter for like $70 w/ shipping but I really didn't want to.

Hydro-Soil..... can you provide some pics of the set up you are describing please? I am unfamiliar with some of the materials you are listing, but if I could see what you are describing then I would have no problem understanding how to put it together.

Thanks

just sounds like a box, maybe cardboard, or wood, if available, with a furnace type filter on one end...prob could use it twice...and the duct comin in the other, tape it tight and done.

Holy sh!t bro- you cranked that out quick :)

That explains alot, but i think my real question is about the "box" and how the filters fit in it.

I guess I can understand poking a flange collar thru the back of a box and connecting to the intake of my fan, but then do you..........

oh I just figured it out.

Thanks bro

Yep... just like that. Though you get a lot more uses out of it if you change the cheapie filters on schedule. 6-12 months, depending.
