Duct Muffler

all of the speed controllers i have used created a noticeable hum/buzz as i lowered the speed. i have never tried a muffler but i hear they reduce the "wind" sound quite a bit. there are many ways to attenuate the sound of your grow room. boxes, sound proofing material, bungee cords, etc...

mufflers work great. i've only used phresh mufflers but i think the htg's are made the same with the same sound material. as far as fan speed contollers, go with a variac, nothings better. no hums or buzzing. i've been using one for about 3 months and will never look back. here's the best deal i've found for one ...

I'm currently using the duct muffler and speed controller from HTGSupply, and am fairly happy with them. As noted above, you can get some hum when using the speed controller for certain settings, but I think that depends on your fan.

One thing to note: HTGSupply shipped everything I ordered "signature required". I didn't know this until I came home to find the postman's note on the door. That's pretty fucked up, I would have preferred an option, or at the very least some advanced warning.

thats weird.i've ordered aLOT of stuff from htg and never had that happen.had to be afuck up
I hope you're right. I never ordered from then again because of it, but they do have some decent prices on a few things I want to get. I may consider trying them again, but sure as heck not for another air-cooled hood :D

Well hell, what are you guys doing differently? I just ordered a new light, hood, and some other stuff, and just checked the tracking info to find out that they are sending it "Signature Required" yet again.

WTF?

This is the last time I will order from them. Fuck that....

some companies require a signature if it's over a certain amount of $.. due to theft probably. I don't like HTG anymore because they put the damn packing slip on the outside of the box.

email them and ask if they can waive the signature on your order.. or if there is a note section when you order.. put "please waive signature request"

It also may depend on where you are having the stuff shipped, i.e. house, apartment, etc..

i made my duct muffler for about 3 dollars, it works awesome. all i did was to go to menards and pick up a 6 foot hunk of fiberglass insulation, they were 2.99 a piece, not in regular packaging, i think menards takes 6 foot scraps, rolls them up in shrink wrap, and resells them, but it was more than enough and easier to bring into my apartment than a 40 foot roll.

after that i took an old hamper, you know the kind that has those spring steal circles in them? you can fold it up into a tiny flat circle, then pop them into a mesh net hamper, i had a few already with holes in them that i didn't need, but you could get them from menards for like 3 bucks too. anyways...

i took a rubbermade tub, lined the bottom and sides with the fiberglass, and pulled the spring steel loops from the hamper, and used the springyness of the rings to hold the fiberglass to the sides of the tub, without covering up the insulation too much like chicken wire or hardware mesh might do, then i cut a hole in the bottom, for my carbon filter to go into, and a hole on the lid, for the air to leave the little fiberglass lined tub. now the air gets pushed out the top of the cab into the carbon filter, and then into the tub(that also hides the filter), the tub cuts the sound by about half, and it is already pretty quiet as is. best part was it only took about 5 minutes to make...very simple...for a more traditional one i would think you could do the same thing with something like a 5 gallon bucket, with a hole on each end and fiberglass and the springs on the inside...then you don't have to worry about grow companies putting too much info on their stuff.

on another note if you ship with fedex you can usually click a box that sends your package to the nearest fedex store, and you pick it up from there, might be better than leaving it outside your place, last time i ordered from htg i wasn't super happy with it either, i got a roll of mylar, and it was pretty obvious from the roll and packing slip what was in it. i have my stuff mailed to a friends house so it's kinda important that it's not too obvious, i have seeds coming tomorow if the tracking info is any good and i'm a lil worried about how thats gonna turn out, i didn't use the boutique this time because they were out of stock, i suppose the tude' is gonna have an amsterdam return address and probably their name too...
