duct muffler ?'s...

Will putting a duct muffler on the END of my exhaust run, quite the whooshing of the air coming OUT of the duct or quite the sound of the air being pulled IN by the fan?

I have a 6 inch can fan that exhausts my closet and runs through my air cooled hood. Im going to be running that exhaust down through the floor into the crawl space under the house. My question is concerning the sound of air coming out of the floor of my house... will it be a loud whooshing noise? how about with a duct muffler.

i have allready seen the DIY muffler threads and will make one if need be. But i want to be sure i understand what its going to do for me.

is it going to be a DUCT MUFFLER or a FAN MUFFLER? there seem sto be some confusion on just WHAT the muffler, muffles. ??

Anything that slows the air down on exit will have a sound dampening or muffling effect. I recently tried an old carbon filter on a 4" fan exiting my mini-tent and although the carbon in it is used up, its muffled approx. 30-40% of the noise coming from the ducting (air whoosh).

It's supposed to quiet the sound of the air coming out of the exhaust. I hang my fan with bungee cords to keep the fan "muffled".

the fan is hung from bungie cords, it certainly isnt muffled. lol.

the fan just pushes so much air its gotta be loud. There is NOT a filter on the intake side of it yet.

Im hoping a charcoal filter will help with the noise as well.

hello there. i have a 6" duct muffler that i bought for $60 i think. you put it directly on the exhaust side of the fan and it acts like a silencer for a gun. all it looks like on the inside is some mesh with some sound dampening material underneath it to absorb the sound. i haven't tried it yet, but i'm excited to hear it work!

i'm not sure a filter will help lower the noise of the fan unless you blow air through it because sound is still coming out the exhaust side. you can get insulated ducting that will help muffle the noise as well.
