Dreads. How to?

I got a mate to do my dreads, She's a champion. "most caucasion people look like goofs with dreads and I've never seen asians with dread but that would not look very good I would imagine." - Yummybud. Sigh you're so ignorant it's not funny. They only look stupid if idiots like you try and do it yourself and **** it up.

Hmm I had locks for years and originally started them using wax and backcombing, only did the backcombing once, from then on used a pick to thread any loose hairs into the dreads and, after only about of months of using the dread wax i stopped using it, my dreads were very nice and real thick too, washed em and all, I loved them but one day decided to cut them off and then I proceeded to hack a few open and inside the core of each one was the nastiest wax, leftover dust kinda shit up in them and it was in each and every dread..... I was disgusted...

Because on the outside they did appear very nice and even inches in they were fine, but at the very core....nasty....yah I guess you just cant get at them when its that thick. I only used the wax for a month too and had washed my dreads from basicaly then on for years, so just my 2 cents but Id say no go with the wax unless you can get it all out and your 100 percent sure of it..
Could just be my expeirence but Ive heard it happening before too.

EDIT
Would also have to agree with yukon on this on, I used to think that starting dreads that way, and naturally was nasty and ugly and what not, but honestly that is the best route if you want legit locks, youll realize it in the end.

BINGO!

Dreads are the only "hairstyle" I have ever liked.....besides just a buzzed head...I won't ever do "hair maintenance".

I've had dreads most of my life even tho I keep my head shaved now (buzz/crew cut actually)

my hair is really thick and wavy when long and is a pain in the ass to "make dreads"....dreads fine on its own when long enuf

last time I wanted dreads I forced them and backcombed when they were short...and fuked it up of course.

I had dreads from the time I was 13 'til 18ish (....then I let the USMC chop em off)..they fukin LOVED to chop 'em off tho, and let me keep 'em (...well send them home)

I then dreaded again after the USMC...then got really hot and drunk 1 summer day and chopped 'em on my own. (peeps call me a pussy for that to this day)

my GF has had dreads for about 12 years and hasn't cut her hair since she was in 5th grade ...and she is 30 now. (her dreads go beyond the back of her knees)

she is mostly Irish, and has SUPER curly/wavy/thick dark hair....prolly the most perfect hair.

I initially started her dreads when her hair was really long, and her length of hair was immediatly half as short ....(hair was waist length...then to mid- shoulder)

we did backcomb a bit and really fuked up some sections...that she eventually cut out

making dreads like that does work, but I'd suggest to let it happen on its own...and just pull the shit apart as it starts to pull.

"pullies"..is what we call them when u got strays that get tangled away from their territory...(dreadies will understand that)

people w/ dreadlocks that aren't in it for "fashion" get all of my respect.....(my hair says "fuk you")...thats what it was always about to me

like I said earlier...I can spot fake/forced dreads a mile away.

If u wanna look/be legit w/ dreads then be legit...be about it, and back it up.

you will not ever imagine the attention that great dreads can create...it's like a tattoo (if you have shit dreads....and look like a clown then youll get HAHA all day long)

"yummy"...your hair can dread...alll u have to do is not cut or comb.

.......again dreadlocks are the natural form of all human hair.......anyone who doesn't cut or comb will have dreadlocks.

righteous...its a ****ing hairstyle for gods sake.....
Incidentally...dandruff is not caused by hair damaging the scalp//its is caused by bacteria.....

You mean dreads aren't from stupid people sticking their fingers in light sockets? Hell another perfectly good theory shot all to hell. Actually I like the look of dreads. Just not on my head.

Of course theirs no real right or wrong way, I mean shiiit I had them for years and I did it using backcombing and all that I already explained, but just in my opinion Id say no go on all the quick locking ways, let your hair takes its course and dread itself, back in the day when peoples hair started to knot up and matt up naturally theyd call em fairy locks cause they thought fairys came and locked your hair up at night while you slept and believed it would be bad luck to cut them or mess with them. So let the fairys do their work and let it go natural ;)

However, yah go ahead do it anyway you want and they might end up fine in the end who knows? Just my 2 cents tho, and btw theres lots of causes for dandruff, try scratching the shit out of your head, and in no time youll have flakes falling, but its caused by lots of stuff.

YEP!!!!!

....and a "hairstyle" is not a "lifestyle"

Ill take that quote to my grave...based on dreadlocks...people base and judge you on how u look, and when I had dreads I was "straightedge" (i had dreads at 13 and i didnt even see weed 'til i was 22)

I was and am an asshole, but peeps percieved me different cuz I didn't comb my fukin hair.... (special buttons i decided to push i guess)

I judged people on how they perceived me..and I put that out there and I still do....

I watch how peeps look at my gf's hair, (dreads) and I know immediatly where they stand in my perspective.

hehe dreads, one of the more "controversial" hairstyles.

Personally I dislike the filled with chemicals made by a non dreadie charging way too much kind of dreadlocks, but that's just me. If you are willing to pay 300 bucks for dreads that are probably going to look shitty be my guest.

I've got mine trough a 6 hour backcombing session by my sister in law. She tried to convince me to use wax but I won't do that, except for how they were made, i don't want anything not-natural in them.
As Yukon said, it's the natural state of hair and that's how i like it.
If you decide to go all natural, stop combing, but do wash your hair with regular soap (make sure it leaves no residue). Swinning in the ocean does wonders too but it's not a requirement or anything.

One more thing: be prepared for all kind of stupid questions from people you'll meet. I've heard tons of 'em. From "Do you wash those things at all" and "How do you get rid from the bugs in your hair" to "Does your wife has problems with your hair when you're in bed" and "Did you burn your hair to look like that".

yep there too, but stupid q's like that need to be responded w/ a silent stoopid look....just like the stupid questions

I always hated that shit, "go fuk off and die" was my usual response (actually the look I gave) to people that asked that shit. (usually they knew better in the 1st place)

If u were honest and genuine about questioning dreads I would respond....but dreads are not that hard of a concept.

how do you make those?
how long did it take to do that to your hair?
is that all your hair?
nice braids?...braids WTF?

old ladies luv dreads for sum reason

or the fukin white boy fools that wear "dread hat wig things " to a reggae show.....how fukin much i'd like to kik their ass....talk about dis-respect.

white guys with dreads in general is kinda strange to me.

pretty stupid comment bro...plenty of white folk have bomb ass dreads.

it's more of a hairtype issue than anything...sum white folks dont have a hairtype that dreads well, and if they try it looks like ass

..."tried dreads" almost always look like ass anyway.....regardless

stupid comment? Geez I just said it was strange to me. I am sure there are some good white guy dreads out there, but most I have seen have been lame. Lots of the white guys with dreads are lame too. They get a little dreadlock kit and a bob marley cd and they start talking like rastas. Kinda lame. Trying to be something they aren't. Then in a few years they find something else they like, get rid of the dreads and start talking/acting/looking like something totally different.

I really don't see much difference between those 'white boy fools' who wear the dread hat and SOME of the whiteys who try to dread out their hair.

hey man I'm not trying to diss you or your thoughts......the key word here is "TRY"

dreadlocks should not be "tried"....thats my stance....if you want dreads and your hair won't dread naturally then I think you should forget it. (even tho everyones hair will eventually dread)...some will take much longer than others.

ive seen asians form dreads w/ crochet hooks, and backcomb...but like i said it usually looks like ass.

..and to be white boy rasta is a waste to me too.

...dreads aren't even about bein rasta, and bein white you really can't be rasta....no matter how u look at it.

dreadlocks to me are showing to the world that your not bound by societies rules, and that you think w/ your own head, and that freedom is more important than anything....and that you dont give a fuk what anyone thinks.
tru dreadlock peeps are soldiers, and regardless of black or white...there is a bond.

I dont care what anyone looks like or does, but I respect anyone that flaunts their locs...i know what the fuk it means.

if you have fake/forced dreads...to me you want the above image, but you prolly dont have it in your heart.

its funny that ppl seem to think rastas or the masai are the only groups to have ever had dreads..... hence the dreads r only a black thing view there have been many different cultures who hve worn their hair in matted locks.....
some ancient greek warriors used to.....
in assyrian (I think although i may it confused with something else ill have to look it up to be certain) society, warriors were judged on their potency by "The seven locks on their head"
what about the wandering holy men on the subcontinent...the sadhus.....
some of the celtic tribes of europe were said(by the romans) to have worn their hair in braids and "matted locks" Some writings say the same of the vikings.....
You shoudnt be able to unpick ur dreads if theyre dreaded and properly matted.... if you want to be able to undo em in a couple of months then reconsider wether u want em at all.
Keep em clean but dont over wash it...washing ur hair every time ur bathe/shower is bad for it and ur scalp.... Once a week is all u need....get a shower cap(when u end up with 4 foot dreads you will have to graduate to a dustbin liner hahaha) for the rest of the time..... when they get long you will need help washing em, like leaning back over the sink in the way ladies do at the hairdressers......long dreads are like a sponge and get VV heavy when wet and this can tear em from ur scalp leading to even more of the unavoidable "Frizzlies" Get a hat for the rain lol...... no matter how clean you keep em when it rains they will have you smelling like a wet mutt so get a hat hehe.
Ive really gotta get my arse into gear and get mine started im ready to go back to beingme agin..... its wierd the lat ones came off a few years ago but i still dream in dreadlocks.

Yep this is exactly what I am talking about. I agree with everything in your last post. Like I was saying people trying to be something they aren't.

One of the last white guy dreads I hung out with all he talked about was wanting to be a 'good person and humble'.....Would say the same damn thing like 10 times a day. It really started to bug me because if you want to be a good humble person you just are, you don't talk about it you just do. Didn't really sound genuine anyways, sounded like he was trying to convince himself and me that he really was a good person. Anyways that good humble dread ended up ripping me off at one point.

You see many dreads in AK? Of the 20 years I lived there I maybe saw some once.

Yeah dreads are nowhere near exclusive to rastas. However I never see these white boys trying to get dreadlocks and then acting/talking like a greek warrior or a sadhu.

you dont see many dreads in AK...but that depends on where u are.

Ive worked on fishing boats w/ dreadies, but most werent Alaskan....and they were mainly in Homer, Seward, and Kodiak. (transient types)

I seen alot around Talkeetna......there used to be sum type of hippy commune between talkeetna and willow where there were lots of dreadies.....I dont know if it's there anymore tho.

most of Alaska is pretty tolerant of dreads, but around anchorage and fairbanks I've seen hostility for sum reason.

you def. stand out w/ dreads in Alaska....I guess you do anywhere, but thats a big reason that i think your dreads need to come from your heart and not your head.

...and u should keep it clean...not be a dirty hippy...dont give anyone a reason to talk shit about your hygine.
