I first saw dreadlocks in 1972, when I made my first long trek back into the hills of Jamaica...
I asked my rasta friend about them.. He told me he didn't brush his hair, because his hair is his strength, and when he brushed it, some hair would come out...
So I pointed out to him that his dreadlocks were all narly and there were big globs of hair that were just dangling by a few strands.. I told him, those big clumps are gonna just fall off soon...
He replied, "That's when it's ready to be gone"....
I was in the grocery store last night standing in the aisle looking for something, and these guys walk by, and I guess this old lady gave them a look and grabbed her purse out of the cart and one of the guys yells out and waves his arms in the air "Oooooh Look it's scary black men with dreadlocks!" mocking the lady. I laughed.
To me the dreads mean unity , strength, sacrament. They remind me every day what I'm fighting for.. also my screw you to mainstream society ( no members here are of the norm. All us growers need to unite. Ic mag iiis perfect for tis.
Back to the dreads the represent strength and revolution .. I'm deep into the counter culture.. here in Humboldt there are many dread heads. A lot off them are a fashion thing , which is the opposite ,of of what dreads mean to me. Its also a nice ice breaker and combines with my ink I'm somewhat of a cool guess.. not the dork in me... which is almost ever present
Plus they mean my rejection of norms and when ur not worrying about how your hair looks u can be more in the moment. I'm Buddhist,? Used to shave my head so in not tempted at vanity. Same with th dreads. No vanity just natural lockres. The key is staying in the moment! Easier said than done
