Drain question

I like to water thoroughly when I water. Most say water till you just see water coming out the drain holes. My plants are in saucers. I water till the saucers are filling up. Then I KNOW I have saturated the soil thoroughly.

That said, I take the time to empty the saucers. I use a turkey baster to suck out the water. You never want to leave water in pot saucers. That's a good way to get root rot.

When my plants were small enough, I would water them at my kitchen sink so they could drain. Now it takes more time to water thorougly and drain them off. But doing it correctly is simply what ya gotta do.

I also water SLOWLY. I use a 500ml cup and slowly pour water in each of my 4 pots in turn. This allows the water to soak in slowly and not just run through. My soil is pretty light(lots of perlite) and drains well. The name of the game is wetting your soil thoroughly and evenly throughout the pot, hence SLOW watering. Make sense? But YES, drain away ALL excess water however you have to do it.

You asked about clear pots. It does make it easier to see how water migrates through the pot. I don't know if clear pots would work in FULL sun outside. I never tried it.

yes i use saucers too but never left water in them, now the pots i have have 4 holes each under, yesterday i drilled 4 other holes on each pot but instead of under i did them on the lower sides (.5 inche holes) its not for drainage but from what i read its for roots to get better air than those under. In my organic soil it allready contains perlite & i added some building sand so i'm not too worried about air 4 root system.Tnkx alot dude.

Hello all,

I use saucers under my vegging pots. I water with a fixed amount every time. I get runoff but I don't drain it rather if you wait an hour the excess fluid with wick up into the soil.

In flower I still water/fed with a fixed volume (3 gallon of soil gets one liter of fluid every 3-4 days) but us pots that do not drain. I do not have any issues with my methods.

SO in answer to your question would be yes if you water to an extreme and have a large volume of runoff. No if you give a specific amount that will just saturate the soil as I do.

Your milage may vary.

Grunt, you should water until you get good run-off,just be sure your plants have a good root sysem. If I have just transplanted I like to sip the plants a few days before I water heavily enough to get run-off.It gives the plant enough time to form a good root system in the new pot:)

This is what makes growing interesting. I transplanted 12 plants tonight. I thoroughly saturated the soil after transplanting. My soil drains really well though so I'm not too concerned. The excess runs off. I shouldn't have to water for a few days, especially since these are under CFL's 12,000 lumens plus. I'll start a new thread tomorrow for these new plants. My other grow shud be ready to cut in the next couple weeks :joint:
