Dog Parks

Anyone ever go to a dog park, like regularly? I have been going to a dog park the last 3 weeks pretty much everyday. Its fun. You get to know people that go there consistantly, and start seeing the same dogs and stuff. At my dogs park, there are these 2 HUGE dogs that come in, and its so fun to watch them play. They're kinda scary thats how big they are...

Anyways, I find the people at the dog parks are pretty nice people.

I agree.. dog lovers are mostly good people. I take my dogs to a dog park once a week or so. funny thing is I get to know other dogs names and remember them better than their owner's names..lol

How do folks react when your dog picks a fight?

My dogs don't pick a fight.

They are not alpha.

I am.

I am the only one allowed to declare war in my pack.

The only problem I have with dog parks are the people who let their dogs assume the alpha role.

I won't tolerate it. If they won't assume a leadership role over their dogs, I will.

Most people in my dog park understand that concept...Now

I understand where your coming from NiteTiger... but if a dog is an alpha, then isn't it an alpha? Its just playing the role it is?

I mean, I see some other dogs being a little bit more aggresive or whatnot, but I'm okay with it. I like seeing the wildness of dogs.. whats bothers me is when owners get all huffy...thinking the dogs should just be little angels and play by licking the other dogs ears.

I say let them run wild and be ANIMALS a bit, cuz they are. Sure if your dog is fighting another dog or totally harassing thats one thing...

Most people are pretty chill about letting the dogs sort themselves out at the dog park. I actually don't see much drama amongst the dogs usually. Some are quiet, some are just spunky, and some like to play rough. Kinda like humans... except in our civil world your not really allowed to "play rough". Thats why I like the dog park, its like a wild place where the dogs don't have to conform to a society's rules.

cant take my dogs there. i have english mastiffs, and they are babys. but when they get scared they get to aggressive. very weird, and they are scared of little dogs. when they come up my dogs hide behind my legs then try to protect. very scary when mine weigh around 230-250 each.

Hell yeah Billycw, those are practically my favorite type of dog!! Congratulations on such a fine breed. And yes, they can be such babies! I worked at a vet and I got to know people by their pets. It is funny when you walk up to someone in a grocery store and say "Oh hi mrs. Mecklenberg! How is your border collie Zap doing?" They are usually weird at first, hahaha.
Funny, I worked at a vet and know how a dog should act, and I have helped train a few friend's dogs, but mine are always anti-social. It is not a case of dominancy, I am God as far as my animals are concerned (not the cats, to fuck with them anywho). It is more like my animals are always trying to protect me, or just being mean. Anti-social pooches do not bother me though, means I get to take my dog to another badass part of the park. Oh well, like owner like dog I guess.
I lived near a pretty large dog park, Bark Park I believe, but I never went, obviously. I drive past sometimes, and it is always packed.
I will always own a dog (at least one) and I pity people that do not raise their children with animals. My pets have been a major part of my life.

I bring my dog to the dog park all the time. It's fun to watch them chase each other and fight over toys. Most of the people at the place I go are nice, and it's nice to know that there are people out there who are more wierd than I am.

I have a Blue Healer/German Shorthaired Pointer mix. Not the largest of dogs, personally on my threshold. About 65lbs. I love large dogs, the bigger the better!! My friend owned a Bull Mastiff and I could not get enough of it. I like English Mastiffs and Danes also, some of my favorite dogs were Great Danes. Hated most of the people in the clinic, especially men, except me. Loved me to death.

Anyone ever heard of Zorba?? The English Mastiff that is the official heaviest dog in the world (Guiness)? 315 lbs, 143 kgs. 37 inches (94 cm) at the shoulder and was 8 foot 3 inches from nose to tail. I would absolutely LOVE to have a dog that size!!!!! Love it!

I have a big park here where you can walk your dog, jog, ride .. what ever. Lots of dogs and a lot of larger dogs which is surprising how small houses are here. Its good to see peeps excercising their dogs.

I saw this guy who had like a staffidshire walking in the park and after watchin him a bit I figured he had this pickup thing going on. he would walk beside the path and the dog would walkk on the path when women approached he would get the dog to just stand in the path and wait for them to walk up..... pats and chats ... but it was definate routine thing goin on... worked pretty well I think

I dont have dog as a pet, had them as working dogs but I'm not really a pet person. I respect the loyalty of a dog tho and the smarts or instincts in some cases.

It's playing the role it has to fill. Dog's are a pack animal, and will naturally follow the member that best feels the role. In the absence of a strong pack leader, yes, they will assume that role, whether they want it or not. It is instinct.

True, some dogs are naturally more driven to lead than others. Those are usually the ones people call 'hard to train' or 'stubborn'. But they're neither. They just don't see a leader other than themselves.

Ever see those little yappy balls of fluff dragging their owners around on a leash? That dog is in the leadership role. It is out in front of the pack, leading the way. The reason for that is people don't see the need to be strong and dominant over a little dog. Until it rips their Achilles tendon out :D

BTW, don't confuse dominant with 'mean' or loud. The guy screaming and yanking on the dog's choke collar is still not in control, still isn't the leader.

Sorry to go off, I just love dogs. They are loyal companions and will do anything you ask of them. Breaks my heart to see people abandoning dogs to the pound, because the dog is 'out of control' or 'impossible to train'. Bullshit. Never met a dog I couldn't train and calm.

Our local no-kill shelter calls me in to rehabilitate 'bad' dogs. Not because I'm some training superman, I'm just a better translator  I speak the language :D
