does silicon make your stems crunchy?

so ive been using a lot of silicon lately, more than usual, to help my plants with the summer heat, one thing i noticed however is that after 12 weeks of this treatment the stems are a totally different consistency than without silicon...

when i bend a stem now it cracks loudly and splits completely, it doesn't just bend in half like they used to, the same with the leaves, a sharp downward tug will snap large fan leaves off with ease, while before i used to have to pinch it with my fingernails to remove...

i am guessing it's either the silicon or the summer heat that is causing this, it's not a problem, because the stems are stronger now than they ever were...im just curious as to whether its silicon causing it. it's sorta like the difference between bending hardened steal over regular steal, hardened steal might be stronger, but it will break before it bends...just like my stems..

i have been adding it at about 1-2 milliliters per gallon at every watering.

Its the silcone..... I've used it as a foiliar spray for a few years now with great results ... I use 1ml of Cal-Mag and 1ml of silicone (dyna's PRO-TEK) per gallon. only once a week during veg and bud set. Any longer i found it may possiblily cause slow, late blooming..... But back in the day when i was just learning about silicone... i played with large doses and showed the signs you descibe.

It does help in enlarging main stem diameter, and also strength...... to the point of brittle... Flush with clearex, and back off silcone for a awhile......

I have used DynaGro's "Protekt" throughout veg and flower and havent noticed any ill effects.

Perhaps the plant is just older. The stems do get woodier as the plant grows. Leaves should come off with a sharp downward pulling, that is how I remove mine.

Could also be strain related. I have noticed different strains have different branch characteristics. The C99 I am currently growing has thin and weak stems that can barely hold themselves up when flowering and they have had silicone throughout their lives.

Could also be environmental. I would think hot, dry climates would affect the plants structure and overall vitality.

I don't think it is the silicone. If you are overusing it, it could be the problem but that is more due to the issues created with over fertilizing in general.

I find this thread highly dubious, and confusing, are you suggesting that Canna absorbs the silicon in some way and then displays these symptoms ....?

POOP-COCK! ...unless you have better proof?

Silicon makes your stems stronger. That is why many people use it. They won't bend and then break from the bud weight. They might break and be crunchy if enough force is applied but it still allows them to support more bud weight before they bend and break.

Evidently the OP forgot he ask this question or didn't really care because he hasn't returned in 8 days.

IME, Si will not necessarily make your stems and branches stronger. I use silicon (Dyna Gro "Protekt") and the stems on my C99 need to be supported or they will fall over with the weight of the buds.

The main reason I use Si supplements is to increase the plants tolerance to heat and other environmental factors.

Where can one find more info of the effect of Silicon on Cannabis....?

Interesting about not using silica late in flower. I add rice husk charcoal before planting, which provides a good amount of natural silica, but I don't add any during the grow, so it should run out by flowering. :)

na i didn't forget, i just got 2-3 helpful replies, that answered my question, then the thread had no activity for a few days so i let it die...

i didn't realize there would be people calling poppycock on me, HAHA! but yeah silicon is absorbed by plants and used to thicken cell walls...i bought and used the dynagro protect to make my stems stronger and i saw this during the grow, i was just a little concerned after i realized i could snap my stems completely in half, like dry twigs, while they were fresh from harvested wet plants...since then ive seen the same thing happen in my buddies grow and he uses the same exact bottle of silicon i do so im sure it's normal, and while they will snap, they are much stronger than they were before...

i wouldn't be so sure, ive never grown a strain with thinner stems than c99, nor have i heard of one, except the princess cut c99 was bred from...not to mention certain pheno's can yeild quite well, i think silicon can only do so much! lol
