does cutting gel get old?

does cloning gel like olivia's or clonex lose its effectiveness or get old?does time and exposure to cutting tips and oxygen degrade it's usefullness over a period of say month's?my clonex seems to have thinned over a period of about a year;and my last clone run was long and slow to root.I don't have a problem with buying more.

Nice thread as i had the same questions a few years back & here's what i experienced.

The dro shop owner in my notw's say's to get new every year.. well i put mine in the fridge(the crisper) & have been using it for 3yrs now & it still works as well as when i 1st opened it. I recently started getting low so i bought a new bottle of Clonex & it's with the old bottle/jar of Rootech(i think its called). I will finish all the old up 1st since it's been damn near 100%. I seldom loose clones...mabey 1 in 50. Well thats my experience with the gels & i sure like cloning with them...an easy ride no doubt. Best of luck & take care 3ld

I think if unrefridgerated they have a short shelf life and can definately loose there potency if exposed to the air for an extended amount of time.

Also, you don't ever want to dip your cuttings in the container of rooting agent. Take a small amount out and dip your cuts in the removed gel. The cuttings can actually contaminate your rooting gel if placed directly in the main volume.

Bcuzz is a killer rooting agent as well as Green fuse but I only use an Aerocloner. I have no luck with conventional cloning methods.

Right on TK i also take enough out to getr' done & have really increased my success #'s by scrapn' the excess off w/ a clean razor blade. I have found very little is needed & the less the better actually. Also i can't imagine actually dipping the clones in the container of gel, but i suppose everyone has their methods i can only speak on mine. Peace all yf 3ld

nice tips good thread :woohoo:

O yeah 3legdog,i did it;got real lazy and dipped my root tips into the bottle, left the gel to get warm and room temperature.and i'm an old dog.but it didn't take me long to see everything else about my tried and true method seemed sound, but my gel was thin, smelled wierd and my clones were taking 2weeks and were weak at best.i was getting 98% success in 7 days not long ago.well,I'm headed to dallas this weekend for sure.good excuse to duck in to town.thanks for the good advice. replace all cloning powders and gels every 3-4 months... dont let them sit out or get to warm.
