Does clonex have a shelf life?

Yeah it sounds spoiled, I've had some go bad like that. I've read that most rooting hormones have a pretty short shelve life, say 6 months or less :( I like the tiny packs nowadays...

No experience with Clonex. Hormex and Olivia's last for years. Used these bottles for 9 years. Stems were stuck straight into the gel bottle. Hormex used to soak stems was placed back into the bottle for future use. I only replaced them because I don't pack liquids for cross country moves.

I like that. Which one was gel, Hormex or Olivia's (or were they both?) and if I'm just getting one, which should I get?

Olivia's makes all kinds of stuff. Here, I'm talking about gel. Hormex is liguid: INA, NAA, B1.

Which is more important is up to you as there is a huge voodoo aspect to cloning. I've recently moved. Everything is identical to before except the water and that liquids have been replaced with fresh bottles. What used to insure 100% success now insures 100% death.

I'd say replace the type. If you were using gel, try Olivia's. If you were using liquid, try Hormex.

Great line FreezerBoy, I know where you're coming from. My local hydro store recommends storing cloning gels & liquids in the the fridge. I've had so many death and near death cloning issues maybe I'll try sticking pins into a doll too.

The only time I've had Clonex go 'off' was when a bit of dirt got in ... otherwise it lasts for yrs

Try keeping it in the fridge. I keep mine like this and have seen no dropoff in effectiveness 2+ years later.

I have some three year old Olivia's gel in the fridge, still works like new. Just about gone, it is only the third bottle I have ever used, stuff lasts a long time. Always refrigerated from day one.

clonex in the UK comes with a best before date on the lid - but if you keep it well it lasts for much longer...

I have had some go bad on me. The only time was when I got a piece of stem in it. It made the gel go bad after a few months.

1 gallon? that is a shit load of clonex!

i would store it in the fridge after you open it and pour what you are going to use in a small container to dip clones and throw the leftovers away (read : don't dip cuttings in the clonex bottle)

the longest i ever had a bottle was around 6-8 months. i never had a reason to buy a big bottle so i run out of it and buy a new one before it gets a chance to go bad.
