So long as you have no sun light or too hot, on the jar you weed will stay just fine, best to keep it in a dim cool place, but eventually the toke will weaken as thc does break down over time

Cannabis does degrade/lose potency over time. As best I've been able to determine light and heat are the main factors in the lose.

I keep my supply in 'cold storage'/deep freeze.... but then again I've not kept any for three years. lol

Had a canister (film), in the truck and forgot about it being there. After maybe a year or so it smoked pretty much like the ditch weed of my youth. I store 'bud' and budder (canna butter) the same way. So far so good.

I also keep my 'seed bank' in cold storage.

Kept in a cool dark place w/ 62% boveda packs, it takes a long time to lose potency. Samples over a year old are very much the same. If they've lost much at all, it's in aroma. It's more tender, more friable, crumbles more easily.

Slightly compressed in a seal a meal or similar, put in the freezer, it'd probably be good for a decade.

I certainly can't disagree with the 'curing' parts. Although I've never done the 'cob' method (didn't have a goat skin).

I tend to leave my stuff in the jars for about 5-6 months, in curing mode. I get 'water pillows' ($.99 ea.), at the Smoker Friendly near by. They are intended for tobacco maintenance, but are a bit too moist to my thinking, even though they are supposed to be 62%. Because of my fear of mold, they are cycled in and out of the jars. I use 2 quart jars for curing, sometimes the odd 1 quart.

One downside to the Cold Storage is that the bud comes out 'freeze dried'. Unless you rehydrate it, you get NO smell, and it's all crumbly. I take time to rehydrate, as I smoke from a bong or pipe. That way I get some of the smell back, Not all, but some.

I cooked a batch of cookies the other day with 2 year old budder, no lost potency there!

Seed viability is increased exponentially, if kept frozen. NO freeze/thaw allowed. So make sure you organize your seeds for quick removal of just what you are going to 'pop'. I'm about to move up to a .50 cal. ammo box.... Use rice for a desiccant/buffer.

I've had really good results using genuine 62% boveda packs, large size. No mold, nice springy buds, just a hair on the damp side for best smoking. I use simon's method "a perfect cure every time", toss in a boveda pack once it's at 60-65% RH. After that, storing & curing are the same thing.

Just a click away-

Some stuff seems to get better over several months, but that may just be an illusion, an issue of perception. Def smokes smoother.

At that price I may have to try'm out. Better price than what I've seen in the past, at less than $3 apiece.

Edit: was just reading on that Amazon link... Are the 8gram bags not large enough? I'm cureing in 2quart jars.

I honestly can't say for sure, because I've only used the large size. I suspect the smaller ones work well, too, at least in 2 qt jars. The large ones last well over a year in sealed jars & probably provide quicker recovery when the jar is opened. They turn crunchy when they're whupped as I found out after losing one in my shop & finding it months later. They're tough, too, easy to handle & use.

Growing from seed, I jar & cure each plant separately for testing. What happens is that some varieties end up so uniform that I can't tell any difference, get put together as the supply diminishes, so I end up with spare packs. I save 'em in a sealed jar for the next go-round.

Do they 'recharge' with distilled water? I presume.

Clearspot, It depends on the metric you are using for 'strength'.

Some of my sativa strains loose their 'electricity' after 9-12 months of jar curing. I believe this is due to degradation of thc to cbn. In this example I would report the strains as having become weaker at 12 months compared to 8 months.

Dunno- never tried it. Other than the lost & found one, I haven't had any dry out. Doubt that I'll bother with it when the time comes. I'm fairly frugal, but I'm learning to let go of the little stuff.

When I retired a year ago & started looking at it a little better, I discovered that our home was gridlocked by excess stuff accumulated over 20 years. I had a helluva time getting it out of the way to do what needed doing, like fixing the sewer mentioned in another thread. Consequently, I've turned ruthless about it & have hauled off, given away & thrown away a mountain of shit in the meanwhile. Hell, I even found the floor in some places, if you know what I mean. My family members, bless their hearts, seem intent on covering it up again.

Dried out Boveda packs? Bye-bye!

I do understand, haven't moved since 1980... I walked out (retired), almost 6 years ago. :tiphat:

Thx for the info on Boveda.

Does cannabis get stronger or weaker in jar?

I guess it all depends on if it has a weight bench and some dumbells in there with it:biggrin:

Seriously, I've had it stored for up to 4 years in vacuum sealed mason jars...
It had turned a little browner, but the taste and smell was as good as ever, it was very smooth, and it did NOT seem to have lost any potency...

The longer it cures the dryer it gets, so technically it is stronger (in terms of concentration of cannabinoids by weight) assuming that all the resin glands remain intact...correct? That's assuming it is less time than what it takes to do the whole CBN conversion and general trichome degradation thing I guess...

It's a very good question i thought.

Everyone is bang on about light and heat being the main destroyers of cannabis.

I would say it gets a bit more complex over time as it cures which may be determined by some as weaker, but getting "stoned" is so subjective anyway everyone's experience is different.

In summary, light and heat is bad. And don't glass jar weed until it is properly dry otherwise it turns into a real pita. Needs to be dry to the touch and duno about you guys but im super paronoid about burping my jars regularly ESPECIALLY during the 1st week of curing.
