I transplant when I know its a female [ requires bigger pots then the ones your using ] and no later than when the plant uses up its water in less than two days.
Those definately should not need to be transplanted after only 6 days. If you have holes in the bottm of your cups (you should) check them and when you see some roots coming out, then it is time to transplant.
Another suggestion is what verite said, start seedlings in bigger pots, 1qt or larger. I used to use beetr cups like thos for seedlings, and BOG advised me tio use a larger pot. It doubled my yield just from that alone (well that and the fact that I had one grow under my belt I usually start in 1 qt. or 1 gallon containers, then go to 2 gallons for the 1qt's or 3 gallons for the 1 gallon pots. From there its off to the 5 galloons to finish. Im actually experimenting with starting in 1 gallons and going straight to 5, we shall see how it goes.
I start in 4 inch containers just like those and grow them around 8 or 10 inches high before transplanting up.When starting out use flourescents and keep them literally 1/4 inch above the tops from the time they break ground. That will reduce the obvious stretch you have there. Also, itys a good idea to leavr a little space on top to refill with soil supporting the flegdling stalk after she breaks ground.I find when the plants about 8 inches tall with 40 or 50 leaves I'm having to water every other day requiring a transplant. You have a couple weeks to go.Get that flo on top of it.
I'm on my first grow here. Started Hydo and went to soil at day 33.
I believe I got some good advice on transplanting. My plants are growing really well since first transplant. You can look at my grow diary pics to see pics of both transplants I have done on this grow.
Soilman was one who was very helpful to me
Soilman, I just watered for 1st time today(Tuesday) since transplanting to 4.5 gallon pots(this past Thursday). Plants are looking great. Crystal forming on leaves now . YEAH
The top of my short (33inches) Ice at day 21 flower...four days after transplant to 4.5 gallon pots from Walmart 1.8 gallon pots. Looking healthy to me right now.
In an appropriately sized container, seedling transplants are generally required after the fourth pair of leaves is well formed. It is of course, an eventuality dictated by variables (one of which being, the subjective fancy of the cultivator).
It is a simple enough thing to periodically check the rhizosphere, however, the timing of this first transplant is not a thing to obsess about.
Sincerely,
Charles.
p.s. Remember, one is cultivating patience, as well as, plants.
Hey Jane81,
I use 20 oz. cafe karuba styrofoam cups, that gives them enough room to grow a little and get those roots nice and strong. I also recommend you get some kinda fan on those youngins. But I like the styrofoam, because when I want to transplant, I just cut a line down the side of the cup right after I water, then open it up and the dirt and plant will usually stay together so you can just grab it out and put in its new container. Also, I use dissposable gloves to keep any germs from the roots. Looks like your doin good so far.
GOOD LUCK!

PS. Jane those are going to stretch alot, dont know what kinda space you have, but if you want smaller plants you should get the light closer to your sprouts. Flouros work great for this stage of the plants life.
err yea! I'd give them at least another 10-14 days before i'd even consider potting up, It would be a good idea to keep an eye on the root structure as your coming up to about a week from now, you will see them knotting, you should be aiming for an established root ball before potting on thus like soilman said earlier this is making the most of the growing medium.
