Do Plants Think?

Weird

Scientist Daniel Chamovitz unveils the surprising world of plants that see, feel, smell—and remember

How aware are plants? This is the central question behind a fascinating new book, “What a Plant Knows,” by Daniel Chamovitz, director of the Manna Center for Plant Biosciences at Tel Aviv University. A plant, he argues, can see, smell and feel. It can mount a defense when under siege, and warn its neighbors of trouble on the way. A plant can even be said to have a memory. But does this mean that plants think — or that one can speak of a “neuroscience” of the flower? Chamovitz answered questions from Mind Matters editor Gareth Cook.

I wouldn't be surprised if plants turn out to be sentient. Obviously not in the same way we humans are, but neither are chimps. I'll read that article later when I have a chance.

But, in the meantime...this springs a question in my mind...just what are the vegetarians going to eat if this turns out to be true?

I'd imagine: plants. Because one is vegetarian does not prevent them from harvesting life...otherwise...what would vegetarians vape? Of course you can harvest certain plants..without killing them.

Plants...for sure...are aware

Up until now, plants are not considered to be sentient, due to a lack of a central nervous system. I'm not saying that some folks don't consider them sentient, but a huge majority of people don't. And I'm pretty certain that is why vegetarians feel ok about eating them.

If this report turns out to be true, and solid evidence is presented, then you might then see ganja loving vegetarians start to question if they should be consuming weed in any form.

That I do not doubt....but I won't be one of them. Not out in left field yet.

I stick to eating plants because...well...I just physically feel better. I admit that I talk to many of my plants...before and during their executions. Hell...I feel responsible....I'm raising them...killing them...and consuming them

I've had strange experiences with plants...especially indoor cannabis plants. I do feel watched sometimes..and I do see them move in plant speed sometimes...but of course..no science..and I'm stoned

Oh hell, I have to mention this to my father ... I say this because in the 80's he was doing his own experiments in home to see if plants feel, his conclusions then were that they did respond to feelings. I was pretty young but he had equipment from his workplace, an oscilloscope and a few other things. I participated in a few of these tests and was quite shocked by what he noted at the end of it .. that did imbed in my brain and I looked at plants differently than most at that young age, and still to this day. Thank you for posting Weird :tiphat: , nice stroll down memory lane for me ;) Now, time to see what Daniel Chamovitz has found ...

Peace!

I agree with you on everything you say. I'm just not able to cut meat out of my diet entirely, I've tried, haven't had any success. But I do try to keep my meat intake small.

I wouldn't be surprised if plants were found to have an entirely foreign way of communicating and it's we humans who acting like asses. Wouldn't be the first time.

I feel that being vegetarian is not just good for our bodies, but it is also important for the health of the planet...farming meat is very water intensive, methane generating, and isn't really sustainable over the long term as our planet gets more and more overpopulated.

We may not have factored time into the plant-life "sentience" factor.

Perhaps our central nervous systems were developed to accommodate not only our specific bodies, but our specific TIMES as well? We NEED to think fast, so our system develops the appropriate tools. Maybe plants "think" in many of the same ways we do, only they do so more slooooooowly....and the "brains" and "CNS" they use are created to meet those needs.

Hell, maybe they're so damn smart they "cultivated" US in order to supply THEM with CO2 and nutrients.

no, no they don't. The crazier the topic, the more attention a book gets, the more sales the author makes. That is all there is to it.

Absolutely.

I gave up meat and alcohol at the same time. Been about 3.5 yrs now. Found out....I'm a sugar and dairy addict. Gave up dairy completely...about a yr ago. Kicking ice cream was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Couldn't cold turkey sugar. I tried last spring...and realized how deeply addicted I was to refined sugars. Physically...did not feel ok..kind of off and dizzy for days on end. Stuck with organic maple syrup all summer...but a couple weeks ago...I started kicking it. I'll cheat here and there...but I'm beating it...slowly this time.

It's not easy...I can say that. My gardens have helped me...and so..in that way....the plants do talk...share/teach...whatever you want to call it. No science in that either...but it's the way it is. I feel way better in all regards. My body functions much more cleanly.

Yes plants communicate to each other all the time. Keep watching, you will see it!
I truly believe the Cannabis Plant feels much pleasure when harvested for use.
It wants us to cultivate it, and enjoy it. It wants us to eat it. It wants to cloth us.
It does not want to grown by money grubbing douche bags. It wants to grown by loving people that are going to respect it. It loves a good organic soil for it to dance in. It loves dancing outdoors under the sun more than it does inside. The females love it when you let them play with the boys!

There is an awesome documentary also called The Private Life of Plants. Lots of amazing time lapse footage.

Wow, what a nice documentary proving once and for all that plants and all organisms for that matter are way smarter than us.

It also made me think.

If plants and organisms in general are that smart then, what is okay to eat?
Plants are alive, animals are definitely alive and organism living in water are alive. So, what's left for us to eat if we don't wanna hurt any conscious beings?

Nothing.

Which brings me to the conclusion that good and evil simply doesn't exist because in order to survive, you must kill another conscious being.
