DO NOT grow cheap mexican bag seed

silentmajority

The first time i grew out some bag seed
i had one female that was better than my best c99 hybrid.

Encouraged, i grew another crop
all turned hermy by week 4
total waste of several months

Stubborn, i tried again.
Same resuls

And again, more hermies

With cheap feminized seeds available at the click of a mouse
You do not need to waste your time growing mexican bag seed

Some man's bagseed is another's Elite Clone Only.

Too bad you didn't save the one that was better than C99.
I guess you may reassess your breeding practices.

But I agree, there really is no need to start random genetics with so many different good strains available nowdays, with pictures showing you what they are going to do. It almost takes the fun out of growing.

Almost.

I have a Mexican bagseed in flower right now. The thing is one heavy yielder! But it's not covered in trichs, :(

It's currently on day 60 and looks like it has a couple more weeks. The bud strutcture looks ok, a little leafy. Hasn't hermed, and hopefully will be some good head smoke.

just ramblin...lol

I have grown lots of mexi bagseed... found lots of great plants... but mine came from a friend who actually knew the grower down there... I even found lots of hybrids way diff from seeds gotten back in the 80s...I would never count on bagseed alone tho reguardless of source...FWIW I have gotten plenty of herms from bought seeds too...don't get me going on that subject lol

If you want to meet somewhere in the middle of bagseed and breeder quality, Cali Connection just released CBD OG.
Im sure they plan on crossing it to a chem a haze and something purple if youre patient

I knew an outdoor grower many years ago that grew a huge crop of bagseed. They were huge plants with long dense colas, but very weak with almost no visible trichs. And out of all those, there was one ridiculously awesome purple skunk pheno that rivals anything I've ever had.
...So there are some gems, but you do have to dig for them.

Growing random crosses is what can propel the breeds forward IMO.

People whine about how only 1 out of 10,000 apple seeds grows a tree BETTER than its parents. But in practice this is not true at all, look at seed only permaculture projects. And the definition of better is very subjective.

I would refine the opening statement to this:

" You have no need to grow Taco-seeds (Mexi seeds ;) ) if you only want to grow a good crop with a high likely-hood of success, there is a ever expanding professional breeding market already out there. But you could get a one in 5 grow phenotype that will outperform a C99. The priority of your grow is yours to decide :)

Back in the 70's I tried a few times to grow Mex. bag seed, but never had much luck.
Fast forward to today I set here and read posts about bag seed and think to myself how lucky I am for not having to find any seeds in my weed for better than 20 to 30 years now.

Depends on the region, the way it is harvested and bricked. Sampled some awesome Mexi-brick, growing some out years ago. With "Two Buck Chuck" (cheap wine, gag as you gulp)...same goes with bag seed. Sometimes a hit, more times a miss.

But better than none at all.

Bag seed can lead to a new line of marijuana. There's bad, there's good, and there's a select few that is high grade. Just pheno find. Plain and simple.

And not all of our brick is Mexican. Some is Columbian in my direction..and sometimes Jamaican brick comes around. Im pretty sure this happens in other locations as well.. so I would not X out bag seed at all. Its international bag seeds...just pretty drab when you get it. Lol.

you cant plant lead and expect gold. you can judge bag seed by how the weed was you bought. good weed usually has good seed. bad weed equals bad seeds, duhh

I guess between growing bag seed and no grow at all, bag seed wins every time!
Ca-ching!!

Have had a several nice plants from bag seed in the decades of growing....Mexican in the SW, probably Columbian in the midwest. Never close enough for Hawaiian or Jamacian. Don't recall any indicas from the '70's onward.

Later came Emery's catalog...the rest is history. Oh yeah, sneaking seeds back from A'dam before going the seed bank route 6-7 yrs ago.

Fortunately, breeding our own (autos) now, no problem.

Like many have mentioned...grow 'em if you got 'em.....bag seed....remember seeing the jewels in the rough?? I do! Those tiger striped, shiny BIG brown ones?! Gotta love it!

Yea it does the trick with enough. Lol I'm surprised at what came outta the ground tho. Glad I picked those bag seeds to experiment with first before spending big bucks on seeds
