Do I need ventilation now?

Hi all. I'm just about to start a tent grow. Dimensions of tent (in cm) is 80 X 80 X 160 (31.5 X 31.5 X 63 inches). I'll be running a 400w Son-T globe and using Canna soil. Strains i'll be choosing from are Mandala Satori, Safari Mix, White Widow, freebie Rocklock (fem), Burmese Kush (fem), Big Bud #1 (regular) and some bagseed.

Now, I have little pots to start off, got lights etc. Except I don't have any fans for intake or carbon filter/inline for outlet. I do have a floor fan similar to the Honeywell fans people talk about in other parts of IC mag.

So is the floor fan going to be enough for the veg period? I'll count on 2-3 weeks for veg, by which time I should have some more $ for the next stage of buying stuff, which will be veg nutes, inline fan, timers, spare globe, scrog netting. Then a couple weeks after that get carbon filter & centrifugal fan when stuff gets more stinky.

It may sound a bit strange the way I'm doing it, but as with so many others before me it's the $ that's the restricting factor. Being on unemployment benefits at the moment i can get by without smoko for a few weeks here and there and with the mouldy garbage the only stuff available to me now (this is the source of the bagseed), going without is easy enough.

The other thing is time. I want to be going before new years if possible, as i'm going on holidays with the oldies in early april visiting my brother for about 2 1/2 weeks, so i'd like to have something grown, dried before i go and curing while i'm gone. So if i can get stuff as i go along and buy as i need it, great. If i have to wait a bit and i'm strapped for time, I may go for the shorter flowering gear, being the Safari mix (i think), Burmese Kush, bagseed, Rocklock, maybe Big Bud.Most of them i think i can do 2 week veg and run for 7-8 weeks. The Satori is a 10 week flower and with 3-4 wk veg that will be pushing it for time. Also with the shorter flowering ones I'm not too concerned if I stuff up, as it'll be a steep learning curve on my 1st run.

I've heard of passive intakes, but what about getting the hot air out? I know hot air rises, but is the floor fan going to be ok for 2-3 weeks until i get the other stuff?

Oh yeah I'm in australia, and we are just in summer at the moment, and in my part of the world we get real changeable weather (hot & dry, hot & sticky and everything in between).

I need to start now so i can split the grow between the power billing periods, that is half the grow in 1 billing period and the other half in the next period. Good tip for new growers, so you don't get too much of a bill shock.

Thanks for getting this far reading all of this, but the more info i give now, I hope the answers will be better and less back and forth for info before a solution is given.

Thanks and happy holidays everyone (or just fake it like me).

You'll either need to air-condition the tent and supply CO2 (Sealed room type setup) or you're going to HAVE to provide some type of fresh air in and hot air out.

Run the lamp for a few days and check the temps.

You're really going to need more equipment. Check the "Stanly Fan Mod" thread for a cheap fan. Organic Air ONE-PASS carbon scrubbers are around $130 for a 6" scrubber. Should be plenty to keep you safe and cool.

You're only running 400 watts... that should be less than around $30 a month. A $15 electric heater that's popular around here is 1500watts... your grow won't attract any attention. :D

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

You want air exchange. Your floor fan will not provide exchange. All it will do is stress the plants and dry them out.

Passive intakes allow cool air in, it's the powered exhaust that removes hot air. You have no powered exhaust and so, have no exchange and no cooling. You can do without a scrubber for now but, you want a proper exhaust fan that actually exhausts air.

Thanks for replying Freezer Boy. That's what i thought about air exchange. The problem here in australia is that we have NOTHING near the range of stuff available in the states. For example, Stanley or Honeywell fans, never seen them in Australia.

I can get inline fans for about $40-50, depending on whether you want ducting included or not. As for the scrubber mentioned in the previous post to yours, can't get them in Australia. The kit I will get is a Phat filter 125mm X 400mm with a 125mm Fanmaster 2 Centrifugal fan kit for $258.

As for attracting attention, it isn't from the cops, it's from the parents. I live in a granny flat (converted garage) separate to the main house, but we both use the same power meter. In Australia, at least with our power company, they show your use compared to the same period last year. That's the reason why i mentioned splitting the grow over the billing periods. Just as much for $ reasons as for not raising the parents attention. On the roof of the flat here we have solar panels, and that's why we went from 2 separate meters to 1 meter.

Also, if i split the grow over 2 billing periods, it's easier to explain a slight jump in consumption to last year.

It's no big deal if i have to go without smoking for 3-4 months, just means i can save the money up and start the grow when it cools off a bit, though the mandala Satori is supposedly suitable to hot grows.

Thanks for the advice, I better start saving.

Growing in someone else's home without express permission is unacceptable in the extreme and we will not help you.
