yeah carbon scrubbers are what your grow room needs, i had to take mine off of my setup loop and you can smell the plants, they are low odor, so you have to be in the room to smell them, but, once the carbon scrubber is on, you cant smell a thing

naw! 15,000 users buy them to waste their cash. of course they work, get one for your size of room and the proper vortec fan. do it right and no problem. mine is with an 8" vortec and both are 7 years old.

do carbon pre-filters work?
like this one:
CO prefilter
Say I wrap a bunch of this around a typical cylindrical ductwork type homemade carbon scrubber. Would that work? No other carbon but the pre filter wrapped around it.

i grew out pure power plant last grow and the stench was so strong that i was forced to do something. i went the carbon scrubber route and the stench outside the room disappeared. the cool thing is that the scrubber wont kill the stench of your finished product as ozone generators have been known to do. my advice would be to getone asap. you only have to buy it once. then just replace the activated carbon every six months or so.

Hell yeah, carbon scrubbers work...

I live in an apartment, so odor control is a priority. As a test, I let my cab run without being attached to a scrubber. After a few hours, my whole apartment smelled like straight-up skunk. So, I re-attached the scrubber and within 30 minutes, it was gone. At that point, all I could smell was the scent of my freshly smoked bowl and the lingering aroma of some Nag Champa...

Growing without a scrubber is a sure-fire way of attracting some unwanted attention...

Yeah I would go as far as to say to make sure to have odor control backup if you ever have anyone in your residence or you live in an apartment.

I run 2 scrubbers, one on exhaust and one during lights on in the room incase something happens with the exhaust scrubber. And the age of the active carbon is different on both so there is no way they will loose efficiency at the same time.

It's OK to have a failur in odor control when you have your own house and you don't normally have people over.

Other then fire control/safety I believe odor control is the most important thing to manage.

Yes.

One, maybe two plants in a case about 3.5'H x 1.5'W x 1.5'D

So, not very big at all.

Check the DIY Link in my sig, there's some great carbon scrubbers for small spaces on there.

I know I could make one with actual raw carbon, but I'm wondering if I can just wrap a carbon prefilter like the one I linked before. It would be easier for me because I've checked around and most places have their carbon put away until next spring/summer. Perhaps you know of a good place to get some online? Also, how much would be enough (5lbs?) for a small carbon scrubber for a space i'm working with?

EDIT: OK, i checked your link-o-rama. Looks like people have had success with those pre filters. Good. Is it necessary to wrap it more than once?

Thanks everyone for your help i appreciate it. The reason behind me asking is because i recently moved my old house was in the middle of nowhere so i did not care about odor. Now i have moved onto suburban street so i rather be safe than sorry i don't know what the people around here are like. Any suggestions on size for my room?

thanks guys

That's something that depends on your consumption and available space...

What kind of light are you planning on using? What kind of yield are you looking for? Are you going to have a veg cab and flower cab or are you going to run the whole show from beginning to end in the same room?

Ultimately, you are the one who knows the most about your situation, so these are the kind of questions you're going to have to answer for yourself. Once you nail down the basics, we can help develop your plans further...

this room is strictly for flowering. it's 12X8 with 5000 W. I'm either gonna add another 600w or just mount the end 1000W on a slide to cover the end of it

My simple scrubber design will handle that room with a good fan. It is in the diy links.

don't cut any corners on the carbon filter pick yourself up a can filter for that size of a grow you could have the whole block smelling like weed if u don't Can filters and prob some other name brands do this for a living and there filters work pure and simple, you can make your own and they do work but not as good and prob not as long i mean i bought the can 38 special 50 series for 125 bucks and it weights 56 lbs that is a crazy amount of carbon and for 125 bucks i dont think you could even buy that much carbon not to mention its just a solid nicely built peice

Endless, if ya can't find carbon you can use "Ultra Pearls" kitty litter. Other brands of "pearl" type will work....just DON'T use regular clay litter.

ive been a loft grower for5=6 years now and have grown quite a few smelly strains and have never needed a carbon filter until my last grow.

came home and could smell the sweet aromas of my crop outside my house, popped down the hydro shop and bought a big ass phat filter which put an end to the smell.
