Hey guys just wanted to post something i found while browsing the tube this guy built it him self just need to find first vid and follow through ,
now pending on what type of alternator i guess you implement i think this could power a decent size grow

Step 1 and carry on lol

this is something i am going to check into and possibly start making this winter nothing like being able to power your grow under the grid

I have not checked the link but always great to grow off the grid and help the environment too while you are at it! The impacts of the electric use has always bothered me and thinking of going green myself. I wish you luck!

Yea it pretty dam cool, i am pretty green in this area but i am going to research this more and see cost wise and if its possible to actually power up lets say 5k + room efficiently

Have you checked the diy's online? all you need to build is an alternator, the turbine blade assembly would be easy... Im actually saving money for a full on machine shop at my house to make anything my mind can dream up, but im about 20k out on equipment still.. I wanted to mass produce my own PC cases, one that would cater to enthusiast builders. But Id be really building all kinda shit and this is something I may put high on my list..

I would be very sceptical about this small turbine but good luck to those who try it! I looked up wind power a couple of years back and it became apparent very quickly that using wind power for growing is not worth it. Wind power is an intermitant souce of power and that isnt very good for growing so its all about the SITE your are planting your turbine. Get it tested in advance to save yourself a lot of $£. Now, I don't know about this small turbine but the vertical commerical turbines I looked at (>6kw) also had reoccuring repair and maintainance costs and it wasnt worth it here where electricty costs are 0.20c (USD) / kwh. Good luck and post results though! Might be worth it if you chain a couple of these together and use them for cool/heating/dehuey

this has been a stoner fantasy of mine for some time now - to power my lights with renewable energy. However, Drbud has tried this and says HID light and renewables dont play well together. Worked well with CFL lighting though.

turn this thing sideways and put it under a waterfall, not enough to run a light, but, maybe a water pump? add in some pipe and a hydraulic ram and you can have a small water delivery system for 'the other side of the hill' - perfect for guerrilla growing in the middle of nowhere.

Well I have done a lot of research and design for my own alternative energy supply. Have a solar system in progress for my travel trailer and another solar/wind system for my shop. Converting my home is too much of a pain and too expensive. Lets just say there is the fantasy of renewable energy and there is the reality. You can get a small wind turbine on ebay for $400 that is well suited for small systems OR an inexpensive way for you to test out your site for its wind generation capabilities. If your site is not ideal you can easily sell the turbine to someone else and not be out much. It is sobering to realize that this small turbine is a 400 watt turbine but on average it only generates 38-40 kwh per month. A larger turbine will return more but unless you do it all yourself on a shoestring budget it will cost a lot and still likely leave you far short of powering your home and your grow. Then there is the battery bank that an offgrid system requires. Talk about expensive. A grid tied system might be more practical if you already are on the grid. Consider as well that the average renewable energy system cannot even power a normal fridge. These people need to buy a propane or solar DC powered fridge (more big bucks). Anyone wanting to do this needs to think long and hard before they make a move.

oh for sure with out a doubt i think as growers we need to to look for other sources of energy to provide for our grows.
and also solar. Pending on which suits your geological area best i personally am looking at this type instead 20,000 watt wind turbine with maximum power be 26,000 watts

http://engineeredwindsystems.com/twenty-kw-wind-turbine.html

You would need a lot of solar panels to generate 20,000 watts continuously or anything near it and as others have said it really isnt for HID lighting. I know you know this but beware those companies stating 20,000 watts and what not, its all sales BS... That is the ideal site and few of us have those. Even with the ideal site its still intermitant. It is defo all our fantasy to go off grid but I would image you would be better served to have a sufficient cover story for your power usage (offering service) and draw off the grid. I sure has hell think it would be cheaper and you could use HIDs instead of CFLs.

Those that say nothing besides fossil fuels would work are full of shit or I hope they are!
any updates?

Use the solar panels to charge batteries for use in other household motors and lighting and use the grid for the HIDs...

I always wanted to do solar fans inside my tents powered by the 1k lights. Never tested it out but did test a solar bug zapper that worked pretty great actually.
