diy carbon scrubber - roll your own method

another carbon scrubber design. this one uses one perforated tube and wraps carbon around it instead of having two concentric cylinders. I thought it turned out pretty well and it seems to be working just fine. for me, its a recirculating scrubber in my closed co2 room, but could be put to exhaust. I didn't show it, but at the end, I put 3 long wire ties around the filter part to sort of quilt it so the carbon couldn't settle with time.

6" perforated stainless cylinder - but of course most people would build one with square "chicken wire"
landscaping cloth, the cheap type
a 5 gallon pail of carbon is cheaper on ebay than a jug at the pet store
thick foam tape to make the "screed"
130 cfm inline fan
duct tape, foil and cloth types

This looks like one of the finest ideas in CS design, but I didn't quite understand what did you use as wrapping material? :respect:

Thanks, I didn't explain very well, posting high again :)

the cylinder is capped on one end, I stuffed a tupperware bowl in it that just fit, and taped, but any capping method would be fine. then I made one wrap with filter like material, in this case landscape cloth.

I cut a strip of landscape cloth long enough to wrap around the cylinder 3 times, I think any filter material is fine, but I had some of this and is seems just about right. it was 17" wide. along each edge of the length, I stuck the thick insulating foam tape, poured the active charcoal in the valley between the tapes, and used a stick to level it out. I rolled the cylinder along and tightly wrapped the cloth/charcoal/foamtape around it as I went. as I rolled, if there was a spot where the cloth wasnt covered with charcoal, Id dump a small bit. Once it was rolled, I duct taped the ends tightly. I think its tight enough so that the charcoal will stay put, but just to be sure, I used 3 long wire ties and put them around assemble, spaced out over the filter to kinda quilt it.

Where did you find that cylinder, I need something like that for something else I'm working on? Cool idea BTW.

You can try with car accessories. Air filters has a core like this. Or just buy a net in metalstore.

I found it in a salvage yard. It is some kind of heat shield for an exhaust system, I think.

Great Job! Looks pretty good too! I'm definitely going to be using a variation of this for my scrubber(s). Hope it works well.
