DIY carbon question

I just made a can type carbon filter with the pantyhose and all that and am blowing the air thru the filter. I have read several of the DIY tutorials and they don't mention all the black shit that blows out everytime the fan kicks on. I remember reading on OG something about rinsing the carbon first to "activate" it but there is no mention that I saw in the DIY threads here. Anyway, the filter works great for the smell, just wondering if I was supposed to rinse off the carbon and let it dry before pouring it in the filter. If I did this I think I would lose half the carbon I bought because it seemed very powdery.

I have the same problem with mine. I don't use panti hose though. I just use the screened in porch screen. SO you can see that my particles that come through are sometimes the size of bb cut in half. Oh well. I know the water rinse method is reccomaned for carbon to be used for a fish tank but i think you will be fine. I didn't rinse mine.

carbon is very dusty, and i always rinse the filters off with a garden hose before installing them.

also, after installation, try not to shake the filter around, or else you'll get another burst of carbon dust.

sorry that detail never made it into my "how to".

If you rinse the carbon, you'll need to dry it in an oven to remove the trapped water from the carbon so that it'll be able to catch the odor molecules. Just screen the carbon to remove the dusty particles (or buy higher quality carbon) and you won't have any problems the next time.

The first time I made my own carbon scrubber I just used pantyhose on the inside core, but on the outside core I used pantyhose and filter material.

After realizing that it'd be a good idea to filter out carbon "dust" so the fan isn't subjected to a hail storm, I put pantyhose plus filter material on the inner core.

Sometimes it's hard to find, but the filter material should be in the heating/ducting/ventilation section at the hardware store. Most filters come pre-formed for particular ventilation systems, but the stuff you want is loose and folded like a towel. It ain't cheap, but it's certified to eliminate many household allergens.

Maybe try this method next time. :joint:
