I just ordered some more carbon so I can refill my filter, the first time I used pelletized, and while it worked alright there was still a bud smell, and from a lot of reports there shouldn't be any. I ordered granulated this time, as it seems there's a lot more surface area on the carbon, and you can probably put a lot more weight in.

So, what do you use, pelletized or granulated? Do you think it makes a difference in the end result?

Hey bounty29,
I am also wondering what the best carbon is. (...or, if it's all the same.)

It seems I've read somewhere that pelletized was better for air filtration and granular was better for aquariums...

I agree with you that most of the reports say there should be no smell.

I've heard some people getting better results with tightly packing the carbon into the filter.
I don't know what the "point of diminishing returns" is though...seems like if it's packed too tight, it would restrict airflow...

BTW, I didn't vote 'cause I dunno.

I'm very interested in hearing how the granular does for you.

Granulated is far superior for our needs; it has more surface area and it can be packed more densely into a given space. It's a 2-for.

That's what I thought, nobody ever mentioned that in the guides that I read, and when I bought it the first time it didn't say what kind it was. I just got the granulated in the mail today and it's very obvious it's better for this application. I could fit the same amount of weight into about half the area with granulated as opposed to pelletized. Thanks for the input, hopefully this'll help someone avoid getting pelletized.

I appreciate the correction!

Yeah I voted Pelletized on accident. Even though I fill mine with Granulated which I've heard is superior.
