long time lurker first time poster here

im getting ready to build a 5x10 greenhouse but i want to dig out 1'-2' so it doesnt look tall from the outside... what tool would be best for assisting me make the hole -- a trencher or a tiller? im pretty much limited to small discreet-ish tools that can be rented

I would go with the trencher.
Also I would use it to bury atleast 20' drain pipe as deep as you can get it. That way it will naturaly cool or warm the air for your intake.

i would have to agree, im not sure what discreet-ish is either. im sure i could get away with a trencher seeming like a lawn mower or something but i wouldnt be able to explain a huge backhoe in the backyard :p

im in cali... i have neighbors closeby but high walls. i intend to run a sealed greenhouse with a scrubber/passive exhaust, thanks for the tip festerous i will definitely use it

For only 5x10 just rent yourself a bobcat for the day, or like mendo just said a basic front loader.... maybe while you are at it dig out a space for a good veggie garden.

But if discreet is the goal, why a greenhouse? Build a descent shed with solex for the roofing...face it to the south, and on the south side wall put in a wall length window with spray snow sprayed on the inside.

You could use a tiller, but youd still have to shovel out the dirt. Yeah get a shovel with a long fiberglass handle, some stiff souled boots and just jump cut that hole out.

What are you going to do with the fill may I ask?
