Difference between a horticultural HPS/MH and a security/lighing HPS/MH

Please put my mind to rest here.

Is there a difference between a HPS/MH bulb designed for agricultural use and one designed as a security/etc. fixture - assuming the same wattage and color temp.

Later!

I like to think, that Hortilux could improve a basic street lamp?...they have the labs for it.

Hortilux labs don't grow weed...but, they grow other things

EDIT:...or maybe they do grow weed?...who knows?

depends

depends

Depends on the lamp they use.
lol you wont find a hortilux lamp in one .
but the osram 1000w vailox you will find in a security lamp is the same lamp that the grow shop sells with osram 1000w vailox written on the box.
Same applys to MH osram HQI-T1000W/D same lamp and good .
The main problem you will come up against is the control gear.
The ballast and capacitors are fine but you will find the ignigtor is designed within the system to be within 20 inches of the lamp.
So if you intend to buy the whole unit then you will need to mount the ignigtor on your reflector within 2 ft of the lamp you can have the ballast 5-10 mtrs away.A

Thanks for your quick replys!

Understood Andyo, thanks for the heads up about that!

I am looking to build an indoor growroom (about 1m x 1m x 2m) and want to use 400 or 430 watt lamps. If i buy the components from my wholesaler i can get both MH (Philips) and HPS (Son-T) for about R1000, but if i go to the only south african hydro shop I can find online the HPS will cost R2000 alone!
Do you think i will get value for my money going for the "cheaper" option?

using a security light is a good way to save money if you cant afford more expensive kit and a hps bulb is a hps bulb, you can grow with it just fine.

I would buy second hand Ballasts then off E-bay or similar, im sure you could buy a whole rig 400w very cheap indeed, it the shipping that gonna complicate things, ballasts are heavy as hell, especially the old ones. security lighting work, but some modification would be a great idea, have any buddys that are electricians? get on to one, they are a pain(Security lights-but they do work) & as the Andy was saying the ballast and main componants come built in, its added weight too, & then theres the plastic front cover to remove as i think alot of filtering would be gowing on with these covers, they aint designed for growing etc. Great advice from Andy but just have a look what you can get/scrounge/barter/bargain on-line before you make that final desicion, how many Rand in the dollar right now? Ive used Security lighting myself & compared to the real thing there aint no difference if you remove the clear plastic front cover, but everything else about them is a pain, But Good Luck Bro! Hope you win!(just make sure you use New lamps(Bulbs) too)

Most Security lighting around me use Son or Son-t Lamps, Phillips too, exactly the same as the horticultural ones sold in the hydro shops, same output / spectrum / lumens/ same lamps imo.
There are problems with using them for indoor growing but its more around their weight/ design etc, they just arnt designed for horticulture but can be used, Ive used the smaller 70 & 150 watt ones myself & they worked but got hot & were a pain to hang etc.
A second hand rig off e-bay or the like will set you back peanuts, cheaper than buying new security lighting & they are made for the job, you aint gotta pay a sparky to convert/customise the inards for you. go with seconds hand or display units, you'll pick em up for bugger all imo, people dont want them, there are too many new forms of lighting on the market, LEDs, Digi ballasts, Sulpher Plasma, etc etc, ive got a 1000 w Super Halide ballast id let go for £20 & its never been used, its 15+ years old & weighs a ton but i bet its in perfect working order as i know its never been used, not even once, its the shipping thats the problem with this kind of thing! Good Luck man!
I bet the copper coil inside is worth more than £20 Mmmm!

Thanks for all the input!

Scrogerman - the R/US$ = 7.69 (0.13003), which equates to $130.
I had a quick check on e-bay, found a 400w MH/HPS set for $56 - quoted $75 to ship to SA! But still, both add up to $131! Will keep hunting!

Thanks again!
Later!
