Diesel Ryder Problems

Background info:
Bought a 10 pack reg DR seeds.
250 watts of cfls in 26, 45 and 55 watt sizes
2.5 liter square pots, mostly mg organic and perlite
ph 6-7

Germed 4 seeds, 3 were males, 1 female. 2 males hermied, 1 was a runt with messed up leaves that wound up being bigger than the others. pollinated the female with the runt instead of the hermies. Female made probably about a half. Awesome bud.

Germed 6 more and a hymalayan blue DR fem, 3 females, 2 that never germed, 1 male and the HB started 1 flower and that's it, chopped and thrown away at 7 weeks. Out of the 3 females 1 was a SMALL runt, 1 was a smaller pheno and 1 produced 3/4 to an ounce of awesome bud.

Now the seeds I made are complete and total crap. Let them sit for 2-3 weeks before germing. First batch germed for a week and a half, 1 sprouted in 2 days, that's it. So I read up, decided to score the sides a little. 70 percent never germ, out of those that do half never grow much of a tap root and most that make it have crazy looking leaves. I now have 3 males at 3 weeks, 1 almost runty looking hopeful female and about 3 more that all have messed up leaves that are about a week old.

What's the deal? Bad batch of seeds? Its really really anoying because by now I was planning on being in full production. I've only had one other grow under my belt so I was hoping this wouldn't happen but had an idea. lol

The way I see it I have a few choices. I could take the pollen from the first run and use it on a female if I get a decent one. I could take pollen from one of the males I have now on a female. Maybe start over with another reg 10 pack or buy a pack or 2 of fems and use pollen I have to get it jump started back up.

What should I do? Has anybody had experince with a bad batch of seeds? Thanks for any help.

Bro they can't all be bad batches... You may want to revise your grow stlye/methods, No way in hell are all of the bought seeds duds or mutants, I can tell you that PH 7.0 is to high so try to get it to stay at a consistant 5.5-6.5.

I was perfectly happy with what I purchased besides both decent looking males both hermied. I ran into problems when I tried to use the seeds I made from a single female. Now that I look back I should have seeded all the females.

Everything I've read has said soil is fine in the 6-7 range.

I've grown a good bit of DR and think it's genetics are very good, some of the best around. What method are you using for germination? Seems your germ rates are much lower than they should be. I can understand not using the hermies but why use a runt for pollination? Also, what caused the hermies? Light leaks, stress?

I'm using F1 DR seeds I made and have been getting 90%+ germ rates, no hermies and no runts. Seems like you've got other issues effecting your grow that you need to sort out. Then get a new pack of seeds and start over. Also, pH for soil should be 6.5. 6.2 for soil less.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they hermied. Out of the 8 or so DR males I've had so far they were they only hermies I've had, male or female. I'm not sure about the male runt, probably was something I did wrong even though it had mutant leaves at first. I only had 3 males and 1 female my first run and wanted seeds bad so I figured since the smaller one wound up looking normal I would use it. I think that might have been the problem. The ph is normally right around 6.5 but I don't mess with it as long as its in the 6-7 range.

I'm glad to hear you have no problem making viable seeds and I think my best bet is to start over like you said and try again. How long do you let them sit before you try to germ them? Oh and I usually use the paper towel and baggie method but I've also used just about ever other way you could think of. I've germed probably about 30 bag seeds/ bought seeds in the past and had 100% success everytime with tap roots trying to grow out of the bag lol. That is why this was so frustrating to me to have SO many seeds and just sitting and watching my grow go down the crapper. Lol

Mine were stored in the refrigerator after about 3 weeks. I didn't use them till the following year. But I think about a month is good before germing. I tried the paper towel method several times and had a lot of seeds just sit and rot and not germ. I started using Rapid Rooters and now get 90-95% germination. They are also very easy to transplant.

I just finished a DR grow under a new LED. Much more potent that my outdoor ones and higher yields. Two produced over 1 1/2 ounces each. And that was with the light too low. Next time I grow it I think I can get more.

I will have to look into the rapid rooters, sounds awesome. I always heard the paper towle method was not the best but it always worked for me until now. I also do have problems with getting them started as well which sounds like that might help too. I've had problems with jeffy pellets drying out and also the top part of soil drying out in party cups when I used the soak in a cup then plant method. Thats why I used the paper towel method and even then I have to be very vigilant making sure they don't dry out in the seedling stage even though my temps are in the 70s.

Thanks for all the help and insight, I feel a little better about starting over. I really don't want to have to build a another cab for clones and mothers. Lol

I know this is probably a question that has already been asked a thousand times and I'm in the autoflower section. But as your main grow, which is an easier route, dealing with males, phenos, seeds and pollinating with autos or finding a good mother and making clones that are exactly the same, always fem and always the same pheno no matter what but dealing with 2 cabs, upkeep on the mother and making clones? I had orginally thought autos would be the easier way but now mothers and clones are sounding really good for their consistantcy. And only messing with seeds to find a mother sounds great too.

Personally I prefer autos for the variety. I do grow full size plants outdoors in the summer, along with some autos. I also have two indoor areas where I only grow autos. I'm a daily smoker so tolerance is an issue for me. I currently have 14 strains so never smoke the same strain more than 2 days in a row, then won't smoke that one again for at least a week. With a mother and clones you're going to be smoking the same strain all the time. Something to think about.

you pollinated from the runt?i would assume its passing on its runty genetics?
