Diatomaceous Earth

Is this the same stuff that is used in some swimming pool filters. The reason I asked is that I happened to be shopping for pool chemicals at Lowes and saw this stuff in the pool supplies for about 10.00 bucs. Anyone know.

There are 2 grades of diatomaceous earth, swimming pool grade and food grade (natural). Pool grade has been chemically treated and partially melted. Food grade is the better pesticide.

I should get some to control my fungus gnats. :smoke:

Food grade is just natural diatomaceous earth (untreated).... Nursery type places carry it.

It technically is a mechanical pesticide, the microscopic diatom shells are made of glass, which cut into the exoskeleton of insects. It is found in toothpaste, flour, sugar, every where.

Pool grade is less abrasive because it was treated, and as a result less effective.

Beware using pool grade:

Caution: Do not use swimming pool diatomaceous earth. Chemically tread and heated, it contains crystalline silica that is very hazardous if inhaled. The body is unable to dissolve the crystalline form of silica that causes chronic irritation.
