deodorizing oil

Any experience? I've tried filters, washes & low long term heat. Heat (crockpot w/ real thermostat) seems to work the best but it also tends to leave a pretty unstable oil behind.

Anyone have success with other methods?

I think you could filter it through activated carbon, but that process sucks. I would think that a season of cure would improve the odor in some cases.

Ummm, what do you mean by deodorize?

Removing odor or objectionable tastes/contaminants from fats. The end result should be a very light tasting oil with few if any objectionable tastes or smells. Most cooking oil today is deodorized prior to final sale.

Sorry brother! I extract the hash first and then make oil when I am trying to keep the odors, color, and taste circumscribed.

If we are cooking plant material in oil and don't want to stink up the house, we do it in a sealed jar in a canner or in a pressure cooker in the oven.

No thoughts on how to clean up oil after the fact, other than level of filtration, but I will ask around..........

I've done this many times with my oil made from vaped buds. Oil from vaped buds doesn't taste good and leaves you burping weed burps for hours. Sometimes its nice, but its far from discrete. To remove tastes, I take the oil and put it in a jar. I then fill the jar with a good amount of water and shake the crap out of it. The water will then be milky with oil droplets dispersed. Take the lid off and then begin to heat the jar. I usually double boil it to prevent the glass from over heating. The heat will re-separate the layers.

Now use a turkey baster, or something similar to remove the water. You will notice it is milky and off color. The bad flavors are now in the water (don't believe me? taste it, it tastes like weed). All of the potency is left in the oil. I tested this by drinking the water---no affect.

I usually then add more water and repeat a few more times until the water is barely cloudy. A little extra work, but the oil is now 100% tasteless. You could be an ass hole with this stuff and feed it to people and they will have no idea they are eating weed. I've never done this, just saying.

Thanks for the insight bro!

How long do you agitate the water/oil solution?are their any signs that the agitation has served it's purpose? Same questions for the heating stage. Thx.

I've been playing with this technique for the last few hours. Through trial and error, I can say a blender does the best job of agitating the oil/water mixture, and using a giant heat resistant gravy separator, and huge drip free turkey-baster. Off to the science surplus store to find a seporatory funnel.
