Democratic Party Decides Not To Endorse 19

cannabis Reporting from San Jose -- The state Democratic Party decided Sunday not to endorse the marijuana legalization initiative on the November ballot after a swift, passionate debate that left little doubt most Democrats in the hotel meeting room intend to vote yes at the polls.

The party decided to adopt a neutral position on Proposition 19, leaving the many local Democratic committees and organizations free to endorse the measure.

Advocates for an endorsement cited many reasons to back the initiative, but opponents pressed one overriding concern: a yes vote could damage statewide candidates in competitive races.

"We're concerned that our candidates, Jerry Brown, Barbara Boxer and others, who have actually come out against this are going to be compromised," said Steve Preminger, the chairman of the Santa Clara County Democratic Central Committee, "so we're going to get lost in a discussion about the merits of whether we should legalize or not, when, really, we the Democratic Party want to put all of our efforts into electing our ticket."

Robert Cruickshank, public policy director for the Courage Campaign, which backs progressive causes, called for the vote in an attempt to overturn a party committee's recommendation to adopt a neutral position. He started by reminding the assembled Democrats that the party's chairman, former San Francisco state Sen. John Burton, has said pot was the issue that would motivate young voters to go to the polls in this off-year election.

"If we endorse Proposition 19 and take a courageous position to support reform, just as we took courageous positions on same-sex marriage and other contentious issues, we will win the moral argument, we will win Proposition 19 and we will win races in November," Cruickshank said.

Proposition 19 would allow Californians 21 and older to grow, possess and transport marijuana, and allow cities and counties to opt to regulate and tax marijuana sales.

Burton said he believes the issue will engage young voters, a key constituency for Democrats. He abstained on the vote but said he was not convinced that an endorsement would hurt Brown's campaign for governor, Boxer's bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate or the other Democrats running for top state offices. "The statewide candidates, I guess, are all antsy," he said.

He said he would vote for the initiative, adding: "And I haven't had a joint in 30 years."

The party's executive board, which includes elected officials and party representatives from across the state, voted 101 to 85 against an endorsement. But the Democrats, despite taking a cautious stance, appeared solidly behind the initiative, cheering and whooping much more raucously for the pro-endorsement speakers.

Dan Rush, an official with Local 5 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, who is running the legalization campaign's labor outreach, said an endorsement would have been a "great boost" but that a neutral position was still a victory. "We could have gotten a resounding no," he said.

The party decided to adopt a neutral position on Proposition 19,

They neither endorsed nor not endorsed.

So the Title is wrong.

I'd say it's the best we can do with that major party but saying they didn't endorse is not correct. They took a Neutral position.

Just reporting as 'originally' printed:tiphat:

but yeah it's total typical media bs

I saw the Neutral concept article and i posted it here. It was promptly deleted.

In this case the tilt here is OUR MEDIA BS.

We can check ourselves.. We need to see our articles clearly. We also need to question the wisdom of those that delete articles.

Who is checking the checker?

Hey I have been at this for years.. I don't need a green badge.

So the Title is wrong.
That depends on the meaning of the word "not."

this is no surprise. It just means the democrats are being pussies as usual. This also means that they probably wont send the DEA after recreational pot shops after the law is in effect.

Maybe we need to see what the republicans have to say about it?

sadly, i wouldn't count on anything different, both
the Democrans and the Republicats are the same
wolf, just in different granny cloths, both out for
nothing more than personal aggrandizement.

we need to clean house and start over!

peace, SOG

Do we understand the difference between the Personal here and the Neutral statement?

The Neutral is more powerful for our cause IMO.

I do not believe in democracy anymore than I believe in Santa Claus.

if you believe that you are surrendering and they win.

just because it's true that our leaders have no morals,
ethics or principles isn't a reason to give up on our
system of government, it means we need new leaders!

we need to return to the philosophy of the founding
fathers who created this grand experiment that became
the greatest nation on the planet and that has lasted for
more that 200 years!

yeah it's true that most in government are selfish bags
of shit who would sell their mother for a profit but it's our
fault! we elected them!

now it's time to send a message, not just in Cali but to
the fucking world! a message that says we are awake now,
and it isn't Japan that has awakened the sleeping giant,
it's our own slimy politicians!

let's stick together and vote these fucks out of office and
elect new people who haven't been corrupted yet, and
then make sure the new ones know that their terms
are limited, no more career politicians, period.

and we need to outlaw professional lobbyists, they
are often the ones corrupting our politicians. no more
legalized bribery allowed, no more prostitutes in suits!

and all these fucks are rich! why can't they work for
a dollar a year! if they are in government to serve
their country you'd think at least some would be
ready to make that offer in this time of economic
turmoil!

you in California are at the tip of the spear, if you all
re-elect the same fools that are currently in office we
are lost! ...people like Boxer and Pelosi are why we
are in this mess, people like Barney Frank and Ted
Kennedy. and people like Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter,
Gerry Ford, Bill 'get under the desk' Clinton and lets
not forget the Bush boys, they have all gotten fat
leaching off our lazy asses!

let's all stand together and shout out 'Get the fuck out
of our house'! 'Get your jackboot off my neck!

peace, SOG

I don't like that our major Democrats in California are opposing but they are not the bigger picture is all I am saying.

We are making a mistake by thinking all Democrats are opposed to prop 19 is all I am saying here.
