Delay for Wisconsin MMJ Legalization

Although a recent poll by ABC News showed that a vast majority of Americans support legalizing medical cannabis, there could be some delay and weakening of Wisconsin's proposed medical marijuana law. Nationally, 75 percent of Republicans support legalization of medical marijuana, but no Republican in Wisconsin has shown support for this legislation.

If Assembly Bill 554 is voted into law, Wisconsin would be the 15th state to legalized medical marijuana. Area residents who support the bill, also known as the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA), are hoping that the state legislature will vote in favor of the bill before it ends regular business on April 22.

Among the supporters of this bill is Gary Storck, president of Wisconsin NORML and director of communications of 'Is My Medicine Legal Yet?' Storck, who has congenital open-angle glaucoma, has been an advocate of medical marijuana for over 25 years.

He explained that a bill was passed on April 20, 1982 that authorized the establishment of therapeutic research programs to provide cannabis to patients.

Unfortunately for patients, the bill was written with the expectation that the federal government, who holds a monopoly on legal marijuana supplies, would be the provider.

This is what the new medical marijuana bill is trying to change.
Storck says medical marijuana is a safe and effective alternative to harmful prescription drugs.

“Many people are being harmed because they are being forced to take these drugs that are bad for their bodies,” Storck said. “Many of the patients who are on these drugs say that they don’t work well, were addictive or gave them symptoms that were intolerable.”

According to Storck, the benefits of using a natural medication versus a synthetic one are great.

“Marijuana has never been proven to be harmful,” Storck said. “It has never killed any lab animals during tests, and it doesn’t mess with serotonin levels in the brain. It is a natural herb that has been used for thousands of years, so it has a long-term history of being very healthy.”

Payaso thanks for posting, this seems like a good aproach Mr. Stork is taking. Wisconsin may have Replublicans, but I've found many of the rural ranching, farming types, even if Republican, will hesitate voting for MJ....stigma still exists in those rural red neck communities. Good luck to all of you out there, we're pulling for you....DD

fuck. im a WI citizen and have proven to myself and others that i get a huge gain from MJ for my disability. my left side is partially paralyzed and when i puff i walk like i did in middle school, before i was crippled. and at the time i cant move to a legal medical state due to college. fuck our state govt.

My doctor seems to be alright with my use of cannabis to reduce my use of prescribed Oxycontin for chronic back pain. When I told him he said we will have to wait and see what happens with this bill. I understood that as he would be willing to write a script if the bill passed. And if it doesn't, I will continue to do what I do, for the benefit of my health. This summer will be ten years that I have been dependent on prescribed narcotics for chronic back pain. I hate the damn pills. Eating, vaporising, and smoking locally produced organic cannabis have helped me to reduce my use of prescribed Oxycontin by 80%. Having to break the law for my health sucks.

We really need you patients to call your represenatives if you don't know who they are or how to get ahold of them look here. http://www.legis.wisconsin.gov/w3asp/waml/waml.aspx But also if you guys ever want to get more involved send me a PM. If your doctors are willing to say this will help too that would also be a huge help for the cause.

I doubt any doctor would come out and tell the truth about cannabis in public as long as the Wisconsin State Medical Society is in the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies. I had told my last doctor about my use of cannabis for pain as well and he had told me that in other states that have legalized medical cannabis doctors are having great results treating my type of pain. He then said since Wisconsin is not one of those states he cannot talk about it, period.

eatmograss: for sure bro I am in the same spot as you. i smoke herb to cut down on the oxy and relax my back. my first doc would have no part in this, as soon as he found out about pot he cut me off entirely, assuming that because i use an alternative medicine that i am a drug addict. My current doc tho is great, i was straight up with him from the beginning and can talk to him honestly about it. I think most doctors know what it can do to help people. and the others are misinformed but will come around.

I was very afraid of losing my prescribed back pain pills when I told each of my doctors of my cannabis use. Luckily both of my doctors knew I did not abuse narcotics at all and in fact I always filled my Oxycontin prescription weeks late every time. From my medical records it was clear to the doctors that I was able to reduce my use of pain meds by over 75%. I was still very afraid to tell them. I still rely on the Oxycontin in smaller doses to be productive. Until I can increase my personal organic cannabis to over 1.5+ pounds per year plus hash from the trim I will still require the narcotics to manage my pain. I want the law to change but I sure am not not waiting on the law.

whats up with that ? would it take years till they vote again or months

We would be looking probley at Fall 2011/Spring 2012 so yeah over another year of waiting (sucks!!!). If this bill don't pass before the session is over it still is possible for it to pass if there is a Lame duck session.

Well there's always next year folks. Fuck this damn state! I guess I'll have to continue breaking the law every minute of every day I live. Breaking the law causes me stress. Stress increases my severe pain. I cant believe this didn't come close when even our dip shit of a governor was for this bill. Wisconsin cant get shit done. I think I may vote republican next election if the candidate for governor is for concealed carry. At least we have a slim chance of that one passing.
