decarboxilation of fresh material

hello icmag,
i've been reading small-scale perpetual-harvest grow logs on icmag for the past few months, on and off, and aim to begin growing for myself this coming summer when i am back from abroad (as my current accommodations make growing an impossibility).

i'll have to spend money on cannabis until i'm producing smokable (or edible) material. money is a bit tight for me, so i'd really like to bypass the dry/cure period somehow, once i cut my first harvest.

i know that bubble hash can be made with fresh material, and i'm sure it's possible to sacrifice smoke quality for a quick dry, but like i said, i really like me some sativa edibles.

in the past i've decarbd dried bud before use in oils and firecrackers. my understanding of the process of decarboxilation tells me it wouldn't be possible to simply decarb fresh material as i might dried material, but is there any way of decarbing fresh bud/trim for use in edibles? i figure i could always quick-dry some bud and decarb as normal, but would anyone happen to know of a superior method?

also, if a food dehydrator could come in handy, it's an investment i'm willing to make. beats leaving mush on the fan and having to fear mr. kitty might have a fungal snack while i'm out and end up spraying projectile diarrhea all over my room ANYWAYYYYY

thanks a million and sorry for rambling.

tl;dr IS IT POSSIBLE TO DECARB FRESH (THAT IS, UNDRIED) MATERIAL FOR USE IN EDIBLES?

yes....yeehaw ..food dehydrators speed things up 2 ..I had a huge homemade one once for drying fruit ..it had stacked screens and kicked ass.. could adjust heat or just run fans...it seen a lot of weed destined for edibles

I make edibles from fresh materials all the time - boil coconut oil or butter with water and freshly harvested weed and boil it for 12 hours before separating. Just use about 4 times as much wet cannabis as dry, by weight.

i've read bad things about making canna oil with water. basically that the yumyums have less contact w/ the oil as a portion of the yumyum surface area is in contact w/ water instead of oil. and also that using water means more chlorophyll in the end product. have u tried making oil from fresh material without the aid of water?

and good to hear the dehydrator's a way to go, thanks trout

Possibly. But for mh edibles to be effective I have tobuse a lot of flower in asblittle oil as possible for potency. If you add more oil potency goes down. Add more water and you can handle the mixture better, it moves and extracts easier. But as long as you heat it long enough shouldn't make much of a difference Ime

Have not tried it without water. Once I've done the long cook and separation I do 2-3 washes - add water back to the separated fat, boil and separate again. You can get rid of most of the taste that way - sort of ST's water cure, after the fact.

I really can't imagine that anything of value is getting lost, based on the potency of the end result. Edibles are now my favorite consumption mode.

That's how you get the best tasting butter! But I'm too lazy to do it more than once and just deal with the taste.

Also something else I know works and haven't tried out of laziness is called blanching. No weed taste what so ever if you combine that with post washes

Dry fresh bud in the oven 15 minutes at 220F. Remove bud from the oven and turn heat up to 250F. Once the oven is up to temp. put the bud back in and heat for 55 minutes. You can now crumble up your bud and put it in anything. Soup, salads, spaghetti sauce, baked goods etc. I'd recommend you start with .3 grams per serving.
This has always worked great for me every time. With bud that has hung dry I still dry it at 220F for 10-15 minutes depending on dryness of the buds and then turn the oven up to 250F and decarb 45 to 60 minutes. Again, works every time.

A very easy and surfire method is to dry the bud in the oven at 220F for 15 minutes. Take the buds out of the oven and turn the heat up to 250F. Once the oven has come up to temp. put the buds back in the oven for 45-60 minutes, I usually do 50-55.
No further cooking is necessary. You can crumble the buds up into already made soups, salads, milk shakes whatever you want it's ready to go. It also doesn't hurt at all if you want to then cook something with the decarb bud in it. The extra cooking time does not decrease the potency at all. Put it in your cookie or brownie recipe and they will turn out fantastic. I've done this countless times and it works every time.
