Deal or Bust? Need Advice!

Okay guys, heres the scoop.

I stumbled upon a great deal on craigslist for a 330 plant site rotating garden. It was only used as a demo and supposedly the guy has 3 units for sale. So I happened to call him for the first time and we spoke about it. His ad says that he has been in business for 8 years and he is now closing down and selling everything.

The first call I made, I used my home phone, which was a big mistake on my part. However, I don't have any kind of grow at the moment so I feel safe enough to use it. So I spoke to him about the price and I felt very pleased with the price he gave me. However, I told him that I will get back to him when I check my funds.

I asked for his name and he said his name is "Kevin". Sadly, I gave my real name because I figured that buying something like this is not illegal at all and I'm not planning on having a grow for a few months anyway. So I hung up.
8 hours later (His ad says hes available 24/7), I called again, but this time, I blocked the number and he picked up. He gave another name "John". I felt weird about it and I wondered why he would give a fake name. So I started to get suspicious about it, so I gave him a fake name as well. We started talking again and I started having mix feelings about it. Another weird thing is, his number has a Colorado area code on it and he is advertising 4 states away.

Here are the red flags:

1.)

First Phone Call:

He said he has 3 units for sale, and that he has someone flying as far as another state to look at em.

Second Phone Call:

He said that he just sold one unit yesterday.

2.)

First Phone Call:

His name is Kevin.

Second Phone Call:

His name is John

3.)

He stated that he can pack it up real well and no one would know what it really is. First of all, why would he say something like that if there isn't anything to hide.

4.)

Why would he be available 24/7?

5.)

He stated that I was calling on a block number on the second phone call. Then insisted that he can make it as discreet as possible.

6.)

He said he has to get rid of everything asap and has only 2 weeks. I asked why he only has two weeks, and he says cause hes moving locations. But his ad says "He is closing his doors forever after 8 years".

7.)

I have not found any kind of site or name of his business on the internet. Not even on the online yellow pages or anything.

Here are some green lights to it:

1.)

Its a good price.

2.)

He knows a lot about hydroponics and the equipment.

3.)

He said he is flexible and willing to meet up for me to take a look at it.

4.)

He gives great detail about the equipment and helpful with some of my questions.

5.)

He is local.

Now here is what I assume:

A.) He is legit and really closing his business down and clearing out.

B.) He's a LEO ready for a bust or ready to follow you back home. Possibly put a bug on the product.

C.) A grower himself and he is trying to keep himself from getting heat.

D.) Or it's a complete scam or mug.

What do you guys think?

Because I am always interested in how people operate just for the sake of knowledge and the big plus (you have no grow) I would meet with him to take a look at it just to see what the hell is going on. I agree there would be no reason to be so deceptive for a device that is legal.
I find it interesting to see how people operate but I would be very leery about the actual purchase unless you are willing to do cash transaction with product in hand. You also have to be willing to hold on to it for a long time before commissioning because who knows if LEO got this in a raid and are fishing on Craig’s list.

Be carefull!!! PEACE

me thinks that those rotating gardens are a WASTE OF TIME.

if you are looking to maximize your light efficiency, spend your money on a vertical garden instead.

Have someone else pick it up. If not, I might pass.

Check the state he is in. Google " STATE division of corporations" for the state he is in. Then you can see if the business is legit. If you cant find him there, then I doubt its a legit business.

Have you considered that he recognized your voice as well and started doing some dancing?

pass - too funny for my own liking...

I was going to sell some stuff on cl once but decided against it. Got a few funny phone calls. People calling from a long distance offering to pick it up next day and all that.

Stick to long time dealers on eBay and it probably much safer and cheaper than the hydro outlets.

the ballasts ive bought from ebay and picked up always feel wierd like that, one of the dudes gave me two dif names also... the grow-wheel, probably an old pot grower getting out of the game and wants to keep HIMSELF on 'the downlow' he could be thinking YOUR trying TO RIP HIM OFF.... id meet with him and scope out the scene if it looks shady then ditch the deal....

just as precaution i take my license plate off(just a block or so away) before meeting ppl for e-bay buys...

Well guys, I think I made my decision and I decided to not go through with it. At this point, if it is a bust waiting to happen, I already gave my home # and full name. So I have to lay low on the grow for a month or two until I feel it's safe.

For those of you that are interested, here is a link to the ad:

I see you already made a choice, the RIGHT one! Always trust your gut. If you had to come here to ask if it sounds shady, then it IS shady. Never ignore your gut instincts about something that can land you in a heap of trouble.

dont be too fuckin scared if u want it buy it....

Why not meet up check it out and if its sketchs drop it i mean its not like you did anything illegal trying to buy a rotating garden on craigslist. If you have to travel 4 states to see it then fuck it. After looking at the ad i realize you dont have to travel 4 states but i dont get it if this guy has been in business for 8 years how come he doesnt even show up on google. In the bay area i wanna say every hydro store would have been talked about on some marijuana site somewhere. Look up other bay area hydro stores see if they show up on google. Honestly though he cant arrest you for checking it out and like u said they already got ur name / number
