Dead HPS lamp?

Hi,

My (nearly new) 600W Sunmaster HPS doesn't strike up - all that happens is a violet (like UV) glow near the fitting.

Is this just a dead lamp or could it be the ballast too?

You may have already done this, but, you can try installing the original bulb in a different ballast or a new bulb in the original ballast. After that, I'm sorry man, much deeper into it and I am way over my head.

Look at the white ceramic rod and see if there is a crack in it.Thats one sign of a bad bulb.

Gonna try another lamp when I get a chance to get to the shop - it's completely the other direction from work - a real PITA! LOL

meanwhile, here's the previous grow - done under a 400, with the last three weeks under the 600.

Take the lamp back to shop. If you have any repour whatsoever they should replace for you. Especially if its been less then a year. If longer then 1yr they will work with you on price. I have done it numerous times

If possible take the ballast, too. If it isn't the bulb, it will save another trip.

It was the lamp. Guy in the shop said he doesn't do refunds on lamps after 28 days. Whatever.

He did do me a good deal on an ex-demo replacement (which I got him to check was working before buying!), so at least I have a lamp to get by for a while!

I still have the old lamp in it's original (dated) packaging, so I might have a go at getting a freebie from the original manufacturers - gotta be worth a try at least...

time to find a new shop. Every hydro store I have heard of handles the warranty on almost all items including bulbs and ballasts. Most even scribe the month and year you bought the lamp on the base.

That is complete BS. I would have told the guy to fuck off and no way would I have bought another bulb.

try reseating the blub i just had te same problem my ballast was chargin for 10 mins and not lighting then i found out it was the blub not bein in right s give it a lil giggle see if it helps worked for me

You're right - trouble is that shops are rather sparse around here - had to make a 20 mile detour after work just to get to my "local" one - next closest is an 80 mile round trip!
Lucky I'm small scale and only visit the hydro store every couple of years! LOL

On the bright side, at least my babies are once again receiving their full quota of photons!
