Daystar AC or Supersun 2???

A

avgjoe

Hey guys,

Anyone have experience with these two hoods?

Which is better manufactured?

The supersun has the dimpled aluminum reflector but besides that they looked the same. Do the dimples make much of a difference?

Does the daystar have a rubber sealing gasket like the supersun?

I just purchased Daystars (still in box) but I am thinking about exchanging for Supersuns. Is it worth the trouble? - evil buyers remorse!

Thanks for any help!

ive got 4 daystars good choice!
im sure ill buy 10 or 12 more though.
ive herd sunsystems is going BK.....probably just evil rumer.

I just setup a Supersun 2 last night and already really like it. The drop down bracket that the socket connects to is bent around the back to be somewhat aerodynamic, which I thought was a cool added feature showing some thought has been put into these things. I am able to easily cool a 400W CMH with a 6 inch inline duct booster fan. I also really like the footprint of this light, as I did with the old Supersun hoods. Not sure what difference dimples make. This thing is definitely sturdy, and cost $130 USD locally...wow I just looked online and that seems to be a really good price! my local store is usually expensive, but i must be on the way-too-frequent flyer program now :muahaha:

Sorry I don't have any experience with the other hoods but looks like they are also a thumbs up by DIGITALHIPPY's post.

supersun gets my approval. the footprint fits my area perfectly. just remember to order the exhaust flanges as well. they are cheap($10) and save alot of trouble. heres a couple of pics of my new joint(still under construction, but functional)

you can see the light pattern from the one hood to get an idea of the usable space

if the rumor is true about sunlight supply going bk then im glad i got mine already because i would hate to have to find a comparable reflector. its simple and functional which is what i need in my current situation.

swamp-- That's the original Super Sun.. I think the op was talking about the Super Sun 2 which has inlets on the opposite ends. Looks like you're losing a lot of light out of those inlets. Have any pics of the inside of the reflector? Wonder if there isn't a way to increase reflectivity downwards by the inlets but still maintain good flow...

the light spread on thoes ss2's look about the same as my daystars. the side mounted vents make venting tricky, more drag on the line, needing higher cfm fan, but there good fixtures, you use your glass swampdank?

On the original super sun, there are covers for the vent holes inside. I left them on, but it looks like swamp has removed them for more airflow. that was my only complaint with the orig supersun hood, as those holes fall in the "sweet spot" for reflection.
