D.W.A.I.'s Grow Journal

Well, here I am, back at it again. After 2 failed runs using a homemade Rubbermaid setup (for various reasons...too numerous to mention), I've decided to just let 'er rip with the materials that I have on hand. If someone was to happen upon the rubbermaid, they certainly would have known what was up...so I've decided to dedicate room #2 of my three room apartment into the grow room. I have a lock on the door, so unwanted visitors are not welcome. My landlord is very hands-off and always gives notice before stopping by (which has happened once in two years), so he is a very minor concern.

My goal here is to stay simple. Right now the babies are under 150W of CFL lighting across 2 grow stations for a total of 300W (there's some heavy math). I am going with an 18/6 light schedule as I believe in the benefit of having a dark period to promote and simulate the various naturally occuring events that happen in nature during the evening hours. I will be adding another 3 sockets to each grow station for flower that will bump me to at least 450W total.

Soil mix and pH were a huge problem for me on my first growing attempts, and I have finally found an organic mix that my plants are happy with. I'm using 60% black gold Cocoblend, 30% perlite, and 10% EWC. I added to this mix (per gallon) 2 T dolomite lime, and 1 T each of blood meal, bone meal, and kelp meal. All of these ingredients were mixed (daily) and "composted" inside a sterlite container for at least 2 weeks prior to seed introduction. I am also currently feeding with a soil "livining" tea that consists of molasses (blackstrap of course), EWC, Kelp meal, and alfalfa meal. All of the above are realatively low in N-P-K, but are providing a ton of food and microbes for the soil life to feed on. Eventually, I'll be adding PSG (seabird Guano) to this mix for late-veg and early flower, with high P bat guano for later in flower. I've also been using the tea as a wetting agent for my composting soil mix to try and get things going on a microbial level in there. I have a Hanna pH pen that I use just to make sure that my tea isn't way out of wack (trying to keep it under 7 and above 6).

I have an oscillating fan moving air over the young'uns, and temps are steady between 70-75...dipping down to about 65 in the dark. I bought a 4" vortex to vent the rubbermaid (and I think this contributed to my problems...having too much air), and am using it to bring in fresh air, and exhausting out a window. Using the incense-smoke method, I concluded that the room is negatively pressurized. Eventually I'll be pulling air through a scrubber, which will cut down on my airflow, but I don't anticipate a loss of negative pressurization (need to build the scrubber first).

As for the plants: I have 6 strains in the soil with most peeking their seed leaves out. 5 plants have a head start, and are between 6 and 10 days old. I am growing the following strains:
Jock Horror (Nirvana) (2 plants)
Cali-Orange (Nirvana) (3)
Papaya (Nirvana) (3)
Durban Poison (Nirvana) (3)
Mexican Sativa (Sensi) (4)
The Pure (Flying Dutchman) (3)

One of my Jock's didn't pop, and I accidentially threw in an extra Mexi Sativa...so that gives me at most 18 seedlings to work with. My plan is to flower no more than 6 at once. If I happen to get more than 6 females, I may take clones and run those after the first 6 finish.

Regardless of that, I finally have a setup that I feel confident in...and am excited to finally be on track to provide myself, some friends, and ideally a medical patient(s) with some much needed high quality herbs.

Here are 3 pictures of the (very basic) setup:

Questions, comments, concerns, as always, are more than welcome. Enjoy the show!

Nice setup man, I like the lineup too. I like nirvana seeds, but haven't grown those strains before so I'm interested on how they go.

Good luck.

04-17-2007 Update

The setup really isn't anything special. After spending roughly a year working and reworking plans for a box/cabinet grow...when put in to practice, my plans fell flat on their face. I decided that I really needed to dumb-down my system and figure out a way to keep my babies healthy past the 2-3 week mark (this is when the wheels came off on both Rubbermaid runs). The materials are just about as basic as it gets.

The structure is one of those plasic 4 shelf units (I bought mine at Target). I had initially planned on trying to grow some lettuce in a similar manner over the winter months, but I'm lazy and, well, that never materialized. So I had these things laying around and decided to put them to good use. For lighting, I'm using the three lamp bath bar that you can buy from Home Depot for $7.50. They unscrew really easily from the metal backer and viola!, you have three sockets wired and ready to go. I just drilled holes and screwed them right on into the shelf. These shelves are nice because of the grid layout. Not only does it provide a good exit for light heat, but it also allows the user the ability plan light placement in an orderly fashion. For light I ordered a bunch of 25W (5000K and 2700K) bulbs over a year ago for this purpose. I out of the 12 bulbs going, I have 10 5000K and 2 2700K. As I induce flowering, I'm going to gradually switch over to the 2700K's. As stated in my original post, I will be adding another three lights to these units as flowering approaches. I'll most likely add a few split sockets to get a few extra watts. I'm not really concerned about heat as I plan on flowering at night and it never really gets very hot here for very long. The lights seem to actually make it a warmer/healthier environment for the plants.

In true journal fashion, here are some boring pictures of the plants:
Jock Horror (that second one doesn't want to pop)

Mexican Sativa (one has already died before birth)

The Pure

Durban (another questionable one)

It's playoff time...

It's playoff time...

Here's my first round Western Conference NBA playoff predictions (with comments):

Dallas/Golden State - I think GS could give Dallas some problems with their smaller, faster forwards (Jackson, Harrington), and bigger, stronger guards (Davis and Richardson). In the end, Dallas is a great team with too many good players.

Dallas in six.

Phoenix/LA Lakers - The Lakers interior defense is terrible and Kobe has had to single-handedly win a number of games just to get them into the playoffs. That certainly doesn't bode well for them considering the Suns have Amare Stoudemire AND Kurt Thomas healthy and ready to go this year.

Phoenix in five.

San Antonio/Denver - The Spurs are made to win in the playoffs. They have the experience, they have great inside/out game, and three top notch defenders (Bowen, Duncan, Ginobili). On the other hand, Denver has Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, and (one of the most underrated defensive players in the game) Marcus Camby. Everything tells me that San Antonio doesn't lose these kinds of series. Denver has been really hot coming into the playoffs...but that doesen't mean much. I just think the Spurs are too damn good.

Spurs in six.

Houston/Utah - Probably the most intriguing first round series from a basketball perspective. The Rockets won over 50 games this year playing a significant amount of games w/o Yao and/or McGrady. You think that Memphis would like to have back the Rudy Gay, Stromile Swift/Shane Battier trade? I don't care where that guy (Battier) plays...he's a winner. It doesn't really translate to the box score, but he's a great player and a great teammate. As for Utah...they are like San Antonio lite. Deron Williams is already turning into a great point guard. There aren't many 18 point 9 rebound guys who can hit 3's like Okur can (hey, at least Detroit fan can take solace in having Chris Webber...). And Carlos Boozer probably makes Cleveland fans weep to this day thinking about him playing with LeBron. I like Houston, because Utah can't stop McGrady AND Yao.

Houston in seven.

Broken rib? Take care man.
Some of those plants are looking sweet, any reason why it appears one out of every group is taking off so much faster than its brothers and sisters

Hah. Yea, the reason is: they are about 12 days older than their siblings. I had started a bunch of seeds with that batch, but only 1 JH, Pap, calio, took. There are also 2 mexican sativas about 1 week ahead of the rest of the group too. I'm just going to FIM those when they get to the 5th node. Hopefully everything will be pretty even at that point. Of course, with so many varities, and phenotypic differences....it's probably all for naught anyway. I'm going to flower them around day 20 just to try and keep things manageable. I'm sure I'll babble on about this in future posts

Hey brother, just stopped by to enjoy the view. :lurk:
What about surrounding the stands with some mylar or if you have some white copy paper you can tape a skirt around the top half to better use of your lights.
Good luck.

I've been doing some research on foliar feeding, and decided to provide my babies with a alfalfa/kelp/molasses tea misting about an hour before the lights came on this morning. It might be coincidence, but many of these plants have shown significant growth over the past 24-30 hours. I'm not talking about the more mature plants either...check out the difference in the two larger Mexican Sativa from yesterday to today. All of the plants with just one true set of leaves really look good as well. The large Jock and Papaya are at day 18 (from emergence), Cali-O at day 16, the two large mexican Sativas are at day 11. The rest of the seedlings are at day 7 or 8. Hope you are enjoying the show.

To answer a previous question about reflective material. I'm almost positive this would help relfect more light...maybe I'll purchase an emergency blanket from my local big box and see what I can do. I also finished up my carbon scrubber this morning, so I have that under control and ready use. T-Minus 14 days until I make the flip to 12/12.

Unfortunately there is a developing situation regarding the future (or lack thereof) for this grow. As of tonight, I'm confident in my defensive manuvers...also I'm lucky as I have a few additional days to prepare, but in brief, my landlord is coming over either Saturday or Sunday morning to fix a light bulb (Metal Halide security light...the irony) found on the back of the house that can only be reasonably accessed via my deck. All of the fun stuff is taking place in a room that doesn't need to be opened, nor passed to get to the deck. I have a closet in the room where everything is going to hide (maybe). On top of that, I have a lock on the door, which obviously, I will lock (I can certainly come up with an explanation for having it...servers with sensitive data, musical instruments, etc.). So, wish me luck...I hope to not need it...but you never know. :canabis:

With that out of the way, let's get to the fun stuff:

The weekend/landlord invasion has come and gone and my little buddies have made it through relatively unscathed. I was not planning on inducing flowering until this (upcoming) weekend, but I decided to play everything safe and get it all packed up on Friday afternoon. I wanted to time myself to see how fast I could get everything away and cleaned up. With a finish at just over 26 minutes, I'm pleased, but also know there is room for improvment. I'd love to modify 2-3 rubbermaids with PC fans to provide a better environment for the plants in an absolute emergency. So, my plants spent the past 48 hours in the dark and are a bit ragged around the edges. I haven't had an opportunity to take any pictures, but things are going to start heating up very soon now that I'm moving to 12/12. Hope everyone had a great weekend.
