When the hell did a station wagon become a "crossover SUV"?

What I'm saying is they are calling the CX-9 a "cross over SUV" when all it really is, is a station wagon(compare to 81 Honda).

Its just a way to sell more, I thought it was funny.

Come on now...station wagon is such an outdated term... LOL

Seriously, I think most of the soccer moms & yuppies wouldn't even want to look if it was advertised as a station wagon- thats what THEIR PARENTS drove back in the day.

Crossover sounds so much more sophisticated. If it's new and has HID headlights, it must be hot...right?

I loved my Civic Wagon(mine was used when I got it), I went everywehere and did everything in it. The rear seat was always laying down, and loaded up with what ever tools I was using at the time.

Theres nothing wrong with station wagons, its just funny how they try to market a good old idea as something new.

The old Eagle station wagons in the early 80s predated SUVs and crossover SUVs, they were equiped with 4 wheel drive, high ground clearance, and big tires.

When "SUV" came into popular usage, it described a vehicle, usually based on a pickup chassis, often 4 wheel drive, and seated up to or over 6 adults.

Now its used to describe vehicles that range from stunted mini-van looking things to egg shaped station wagons, many don't come with 4 wheel drive, and have chassis that would fly apart in short order if you tried to use them in such a fashion. Many don't really seem able to haul very many people or things.

SUV=Station wagons and jacked up tiny mini-vans.

A buddy of mine had one of those Eagle wagons for a few years. Pretty sure it was a standard, too. Neat car for sure and incredibly novel for it's time, but man was that thing a beast; I don't think I'd ever want one as a daily driver. Lol, he made it through some serious terrain with that thing though :joint:

FWIW I'm currently running a newer Blazer, an 'SUV,' and absolutely love it. MPG is bad, but plenty of power, seating, and cargo space, plus you can never go wrong with the 4WD. Very utilitarian vehicle. And definitely one of the last real SUVs, I think. It's got a real frame and ground clearance and is actually designed for leaving the pavement. I agree with you BC that a lot of the SUV dubbed vehicles coming out now are not very functional. Most seem to be pretty flashy though, big rims and all. I don't think I'd ever want wheels larger than 16" for serious off-roading. Plus anything without 4WD shouldn't be considered an SUV...and AWD doesn't count.

Japan can definitely engineer some quality vehicles. I've owned several Honda cars and loved them. I'd really like to get ahold of a Toyota 4Runner...wish it was available with a diesel engine. I wish there were any mid-sized vehicles with a diesel option in the US. Hopefully soon.

And BTW, I wasn't intending to say that there was anything wrong with station wagons. It's just that I think main stream society is caught up in all of the advances of recent years. So coming out with a hot new vehicle called a station wagon probably won't have people flocking for a test drive. I guess it's a new age, so maybe a new name is fitting?

Take care. :joint:
