Creating seeds

So out of 10 I have 6 females and 4 males, I kept one of the larger and healthier males for pollen and removed the other 3 from the room.

My question is if i want to create seeds do I just keep the male in there with the females and have them pollen naturally? or should i grow out the females and the 1 male in different rooms and bring the male in there at a certain time to pollinate. What's the best way to create seeds?

I prefer to keep 'em separated and selectively pollinate a branch or two. That way I get plenty of seeds and plenty of seedless smoke.

That's my preference. Either way works, but the selective method gives you better yield and as I said, plenty of seeds and seedless smoke.

A little bit of pollen goes a LONG way

Oh yeah, I collect the pollen and use an artist brush to paint a bit of pollen on selected buds, preferably lower branches.

Keep them in the same room and you'll end up with thousands of seeds, it will work just like nature intended. But if you only need say 100s seeds for a next grow and seed-free bud to smoke you should keep them separetly, that way you could just pollinate a branch or two.

If you want to make as many seeds as possible you should have females/males in seperate rooms so you can pollinate the females at their peak, when buds are the biggest with white hairs(pistills), when the pistills turn brownish its already too late to pollinate.

The pistills turn brown and revert into the calyx when they are succesfully pollinated.

good luck

I let the male I want do his thing nice and early, before his flowers are really capable of opening up. As soon as I see that first bit of pollen, I rub more into lower buds, then remove and cull the male. The females shouldn't be too heavily seeded that way (just a few dozen at the most).

Sandnut thanks for the advice, I don't have a 2nd room nor do I have the space for one, so i'm going to let the male flower outside and bring him in when the time is right..

Welderdan thanks for the info.. How do you collect pollen from the male?

I fold a piece of paper in half so I have a nice crease in it, then unfold it and put it under a branch and let the pollen fall on the paper. The crease comes in handy for separating multiple small packages of pollen (you can freeze it for later use). I will dump a little in a bottle cap or other small container that I can take to the females, then paint a bud or two with a small brush.

Q-tips will work if you don't have a little brush.

If you are letting the male grow outside, simply hold the paper under a branch and tap it lightly to get the pollen to fall on the paper.

Been doing this for years now. Works like a champ.

Once the male is ready to spill pollen, you can even cut a branch and put it in a glass of water until it drops pollen. Males don't need much light at this point and putting the branch under a CFL or even a sunny window (away from the ladies of course) works great.

Good stuff WD.

I might add that I have read that it is important to dry the pollen somewhat before
putting it into the freezer.

I hope to do this, but had to chop a beeaaauuutiful PurpleBerry male because I have
yet to set aside a safe "male box".

Take care,

JD

Sounds like you have it covered but I will add my own method.

Take the male out of the grow at around 2 to 3 weeks into flower and remove 1 branch with pollen sacks on it. Kill the male and make sure it is not around the grow at all even dead. Put the branch into a cup or bottle of water with the base where it was cut covered with water, and keep it on 12/12 light cycle.

I put the branch into a cupboard with a small cfl light with timer. Keep the door closed, open just enough for the power cord to go in there.

In 1 or 2 weeks you will see the pollen sacks open and yellow dust falling. Collect on paper or just run a q tip on the open sacks and then rub the q tip with pollen on a few lower buds.

I would get from 5 to 15 seeds per small bud. Buds would be around 1 inch by 1/2 inch around, so just popcorn type.

ok .. depending on how many seed u want.. first.. flower females.. for atleast 2 weeks.. then toss the male into flower with them.. the bigger the plants the more seed female wize.. the male can be tiny it dont matter.. a little pollen will do the job.. i used a seperate seed box that i had made and got a hepa filter for and only 8 cfls in a 4x4x2.5ft seed box. and got great results im not growing for buds in there just seed.. so i dont need huge dense buds. i get a decent amount of seed.. and dont need to waste mad money on electric to do so
