could any bio bucket gurus help me out here?

the mother/veg cab is up and running and clones will be taken very shortly for sexing and a first run to find the keeper mothers. currently in the process of designing/building the (2)flowering cabinets(36"x20"x76") and not sure which way to go with this. would it be better to angle the drain pipe towards the center or towards one side of the reservoir to help with aeration and nute mixture? also, knowing the root ball is going to grow quickly in this system, would you guys recommend using a 14 gal reservoir and 4-4gal. square buckets with plants about 30" tall or going scrog with 3-5gal. square buckets and vegging for a shorter period of time? any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Hi darippa,
Good to see new people trying Bio buckets! To answer your questions: For four buckets, all you would need is a one foot drop for sufficient aeration. I don't think it matters whether you angle the drain pipe or not. In a small space, I think a SCROG would make best use of your light. With all bud sites at one level, the buds would receive equal amounts of light. What kind of light will you be using? Seems your narrow footprint (36"X20") would be hard to cover with a single 250 watt bulb. Ideally, the bulb should be parallel to the short side of the cab, but you may not have enough depth (20") to do that. Two 150 watt bulbs (parallel to the short side) may give you better coverage.

petemoss,
thanks for the reply man. your grows are where i got some ideas from. the flower cabs will be using air cooled 400w cmh/hps lights. would 2-150/or 250w lights be better than the 400?
ill check the dimensions on hood designs and find what would fit the best. it seems like i have to scrog with the limited height and using a bio bucket design as they take up a little over 2-1/2' in the cab. looking at a full screen of 10" colas once i get the mother strains dialed in right.

I thought you would use a 250 watt light to cover five sq feet (at 50 watts per sq ft), but a 400 watter would be even better IF you can handle the extra heat. I've tried to fit a cooltube into a similar sized cab and it was hard to get the tube to fit across the short 20" side with the flexible ducts on both ends. Ended up with the cooltube laying diagonally across. If you get a regular air cooled hood, some thing like the original Super Sun reflector (not the SS2) would fit nicely. The 4" flanges come out of the top of the hood, not the ends. Much better for a small cab IMO.

I'm starting to grow again with two cabinets. One for veg/clones and one for flowering. Sold my chiller and didn't want to grow DWC during the hot summer months. Hope you decide to SCROG. I'll be watching! I had a ball with my SCROGs and found it quite easy, especially with a low maintenance system like Bio buckets that gave me plenty of time to play with my plants.

thanks again petemoss,
youre making this easier. the first flowering run (from 17 seeds) will just be in 1 gallon hempy buckets to find the females and select a couple mothers. the second flowering run will be in bio buckets and scrog method. i should get a decent idea of the stretch amounts on the first run and find which of the strains to run in the bio buckets. ill post up some pics when its ready
