Costa Rica - Puntarenas/San Jose

I'm traveling to CR in early 2015, headed to Puntarenas for vacation. Flying to San Jose and checking out the scenery driving out to Puntarenas.

I was wondering what the herb/hash scene was like? I've checked out webehigh and I've gotten a little advice from a friend who has visited before.

I'm told there are usually 3 grades.....low end outdoor (usually Columbian), mid grade outdoor (usually grown on CR), and crippy (local indoor/strain specific). Prices roughly $10 for 1/4 of schwag up to $60+ an 1/8 of indoor. Finding something shouldn't be hard, but finding good quality may be difficult. Does this sound about right??

Is hash available or nonexistent?

Thanks for any info or help!

Yes. Accurate. I sent the Friendly Guatemalteco Guys back 2 times politely, in Spanish - when I was offered the equiv of one joint of basura for 40usd. Then half an hour later, about 3 joints worth of same, for same 40. Finally, I was escorted to the dealer's house, past the coked-out Canadian Beauty-whore - and his scowling group of desperado wannabe gangstahs - whereupon 'Pepe' opened his personal fridge and inside was a whole lot of Jars 'o schwag. Bought some - an oz. Pictured is one of the only decent looking nuglettes I could find in the bag of mixed bud.

Glad I brought my Afgoo Kief. haha. The pot is not very good unless you get very lucky. 300 oz is standard. I plan on going again, for my 5th trip there - Late Spring 2015.

You are referring to the state of Puntarenas, corecto...? The city of the same name is nowhere one would want to stay for more than enuf time to possibly eat lunch, and then go. A well-known nasty corner of a wonderful country. (Don't leave anything unattended anywhere, though)

Correct, the state......visiting a bunch of other places too. Trying to see as much as possible. Hearing good things about Jaco....surfing, buds, etc.....sounds like fun.

Thanks for the info.

Jaco is a pit, with bars and prostis everywhere. Tons of coke, and ripoffs. There are 100's of better places, but if you are going to CR to party, you're on track. Don't leave anything unattended, and be aware of your surroundings at all times in Jaco. I was there when it was a low-key beach resort. It has morphed into CR's biggest monstrosity. Obviously, I do not love built-up CR resorts. Some do. I go for the nature, the surf, AND the people. But the nice ticos, not the jaded ones looking for trouble. Jaco's surf is pitiable, and the nearby beaches like Hermosa are crowded now.

Last time I was in CR was in 2001 and I rented a car, and I brought my own weed (thank God). Stayed up north in Tamarindo (accommodations were good, food was just ok, relatively close to some good surf spots, boat trips to Witches Rock and Ollies made it even more fun).

I then stayed in Jaco and planned on being there for a week, but I left after a few days and went back up north. Jaco had a Tijuana-esque charm to it at that time. If I never went back there it'd be too soon.

The whole time I was in CR, I was hunting for some weed but I always came away empty handed. I just couldn't justify spending money on the subpar herb like I was seeing.

If I were going back, I'd figure out some kinda way to bring some hash along. Unless you know someone there, you're either going to get lucky or be smoking schwag. Of course, I was there over a decade ago, so maybe things have changed for the better.

HB.

when I was there 4 years ago I was hit up by street vendors who sell coffee to tourists and found one with pretty decent schwag.
I like to use Rasta taxi drivers to find herb in that part of the world.

I was glad I brought my own dank with me because what I could score was weak.

I only saw indoor once in 6 months traveling down that way and I preferred the sun grown.

There is good/very good indoor in Costa but its pretty taxed unless you know someone. Go to avellanas or Playa Negra near Tamarindo and ask around.

Good One Hemphrey.>! The Boat ride to Roca Bruja was a special thing for me. The area was primordial. Loved it.

It is unlikely to find dank in CR. Yes, it's there but has to come from San Jose usually. I was introduced to the dealer and his private stash, because I said I was in the know, and would only buy good weed. For a decent price. What they thought was "cripi" (creepy) - was not too creepy to me. haha. I bought it, but couldn't wait to smoke my own again. Next time I will prob get some buds down there somehow. Deffo some bubble hash, I can survive on that easily. I also love to take Bubble in capsule form of late. GREAT buzz.

So, Brotherindica, Do you want to be near the surfing, or is that not a factor for ya.?

Thanks for all the info, guys!

I definitely would like to at least try the surfing at some point, but it isn't super important for me. Any places you'd recommend?

Almost any beach town has lessons available. They are quite patient, and will have you standing up in the first or second session. Well worth it. Some people spend years learning what these guys can teach in a week.

Thanks, good to know. I'm not exactly a beginner surfer, but far from a pro. It's been a few years since I've been on a board, but I'm confident it'll come back. These days I'm usually on a board, but it's on snow.

Oh, you're fine. Rent a board for a week, at a place that has many boards, where if you prefer to try a different one one day, you can. I'd start off with a nice floaty 'round-nose' hybrid board around 8 feet, and see how that goes. Best all around shape, IMHO of 25 years of surfing, and 4 trips to Costa. Many people like Tamarindo for a touch of fun and surf. It has grown a lot. Playa Grande is where the spread-out surf is, near Tamarindo. Jaco's waves tend to close out anything over 3 feet. Can't handle bigger waves. Pl. Hermosa is where the surf is near Jaco. Has gone from being a huge empty beach to a bit busier now. Nosara is cool, but too much California Attitude, for my tastes. I like Santa Teresa, but don't tell everybody..>! Pura Vida..

I can't wait for my trip, but it is essential to wait for late spring/early summer, and the great S swells. If I can wait that long. Sheez, if I could find a caretaker I'd go tomorrow. haha. Ah, the life of a grower. Freedom to live each day as you please, but no ability to get away.>>!!!!!!

Ever been to Boca Barranca? Hear the long board conditions are perfect......potential for super long waves.

Also hear the river makes the water dirty and there are crocodiles in area.......:dance013:

To answer an old question, haha. Boca Barranca is extremely polluted, and is a river mouth. Usually dirtier water at bocas. And there are many sometimes large crocs too. I found it to be no big deal. But the crocs were cool.

I like to be farther away from the maddening hordes. Too many years in CA, made me dislike crowds in or out of the water.

Hope it helps, someone..! JAJAJA.

Guiones has GREAT (BIGGG) surf at this time of year. Very challenging, with brutal holddowns. I'd give that place another try. What bothered me most was the Coke use, and how many people were really there FOR that....! Plus, there were SOOOO many Mendocino-ites there, I felt like I never left home for the attitude. But, the surf was incredible.. Stayed for a week, then went to Santa, and stayed for a month.

Pura VIDA...! Catch one (or twenty) for Me..!!!

I'll be offshore fishing the first 4 days. The next 5 days are for waves.

My coke days are far behind me and I'm too old to know what Mendocino-ites are.;) Ticos are the best.

Mendocino-ites. Xenophobic people who travel in packs, wear the same clothes even in 90+ degrees, (camo) to look tough, never bother to speak a word of Spanish, unless they need something bad.

And somehow manage to exclude all others, tico or gringo, unless they submit to the scrutiny of said pack of small-minded small-town northern californians with megalomaniac tendencies due to living the grower/Drug Life for generations.

People are fine until they hear that the relatively pure coke is easier to get than weed, esp good nugs - and it's usually 20 a gram at most.
