Cops and Cell Phone Info

B

BrnCow

Read this slowly and especially notice what the 911 operator did to the dude through his cell phone...

A Brownwood man was arrested Friday after he fled from police and made a false 911 call to divert officers in an attempt to escape capture, according to law enforcement officials.

A Brownwood Police narcotics officer and Brown County Sheriff’s investigator were looking for two wanted people on Friday, June 1st when they received information that they were possibly together at a residence on Gifford Street.

According to the report, around 5:00pm, Arthur Lopez was seen leaving the residence in a vehicle so the officers activated their emergency lights on the unmarked vehicle and attempted to make a stop on the vehicle. Reports state that Lopez ignored the lights and turned onto Hall Street and eventually parked near a residence in the 1200 block of Hall Street, and then fled on foot through several yards.

According to the report, an eye witness was able to use a cell phone to video Lopez entering a residence on Hall Street. Several officers arrived to form a perimeter around the residence, the report states.

While this was occurring, a person claiming that they were being held at gunpoint at a residence on Magnolia Street, but could not remember their address, called 911.

Well in the 911 call, the cops can track the phone so it didn't matter what or where he told the dispatch, the call only confirmed he was in the house.

However a person can change those settings in most cell phones so the operator can not track the call. But just hope ya never need that option,

cells can be turned on remotely (ie someone who isnt you, can use your phone for eaves dropping, sending/receiving info etc)
.... if we're talking feds, they have their buttbuddies in the communications industry, and the rights to use them.

if you have/use a cell, they can trace you, any of that ,no matter what "settings" you change.
it's just a matter of how bad they want you..

I think it was a clever attempt by the perp. Too bad it didn't work out for him but that was some quick thinking during what was certainly a stressful situation to say the least!

It doesn't work like that.

ALL user settings are being overridden once a 911 call has been placed.

Smart phone or not, if the phone in question HAS GPS and you have placed an emergency call you're "on the map" with pin point accuracy.
If it does not have GPS (whether activated or not) you're still above the radar, just this time not with pinpoint accuracy but through tower proximity instead. It's called triangulation. Google that.

E911 activates different stuff that allows any phone to be located. Almost all smartphones have some sort of location running for widgets etc. Most leave GPS off but network on however just having the phone on is enough for cell company to locate it. Tracking via cell radio triangulation uses the most resources followed by GPS and then network (3g) location. A rooted android device will let you see everything with apps like logcat and betterybatterystats. If they are remotely listening to you it will cause your battery to drain. The same radio that allows you to talk on the phone is also the same one that keeps you on the towers and located and we all know that voice calls drain the battery faster than anything else.

To do anything on a phone takes power and that power comes from a small battery. If you haven't installed any apps or travelled to any unknown service area or had any app go rogue or made any change to your phone whatsoever and it suddenly starts losing battery for no reason then you might have a problem.

I don't think tracking requires much energy.

The only way to be safe is to not have communication devices that have receivers on them with you.

This isn't limited to only cell phones (some phones such as iphones cannot have the battery removed, and others may have small batteries secreted inside of the compartment to permit officials to turn them on remotely, though this is HIGHLY unlikely). GPS tracking devices and cameras fall under this as well.

The only way to be safe is to keep your transportation devices in an area where no one else has access to them. Conducting business in vehicles that aren't garage kept is dangerous because cops can place trackers on your vehicle at any time without your knowledge and in many states without a warrant.

This. They will triangulate your position using the towers. This is so they can find you if you don't provide a location during an emergency.

It has nothing to do with your phone. It's through the network.

I called 911 a few weeks ago to report a really drunk driver who was about to kill himself or someone else right in front of me at 55mph at night down a rural road. He was pratically sailing a ship and when on coming traffic came he was kicking up dust clouds going off the road.

Anyways, I reported the road, direction, distance from highway, license plate number, and car type/description. The 911 operator was waiting for me to get her a crossroad and I was taking to long we passed it and had to turn around to get it. She was like I see you hear is that where you are, I was like YUP holy shit. So yeah, they can find you via cell phone in seconds anytime they want.

Maybe call a homie to meet you around corner or something, you dont call 911. Or just dont run, unless your faster than radio, but if you has no choice hell yeah bail, but dont do dumb shite, specially if you almost got away. Nice info.
