Ex-Border Patrol Agent Gets Caught On Camera
By Suleika Acosta, KOLD News 13
We're getting the first look at a tape that could send a local Border Patrol agent to prison. It's a story KOLD News 13 brought you first last week. The agent was caught on camera stealing marijuana from a smuggling suspect. A jury saw it and convicted him on drug possession charges.
As part of procedure, DPS reviews dash cam video for training and safety. Just one week after a drug bust, a Sergeant watched this footage and he couldn't believe his eyes. Caught on Tape: this Border Patrol agent was supposed to be guarding this truck with marijuana but instead takes part in the crime.
DPS stopped this Ford pick up along Highway 83 and found hundreds of pounds of marijuana in the truck's bed. As the officer chased the suspects into the desert, that's when Border Patrol Agent Michael Gonzales drove up to assist.
He waits, until the coast is clear. That's when he pulls out a bale of pot and carefully arranges the others so officers won't notice. Gonzales then closes the tailgate and takes the package to his patrol car where he stashes the 25 pounds of pot into his trunk, all in a matter of minutes.
DPS Sergeant Ray Kennedy was the first to watch this shocking video.
"It makes all of us officers feel extremely bad because one bad officer always reflects on everybody," says Kennedy.
Authorities say Gonzales called in sick the next day. Cell phone records show he was in California. That's where officers suspect he sold the marijuana, worth about $20,000.
Investigators say in the nine years Gonzales worked for Border Patrol, he never once made a pot seizure. The day of that bust, he was 15 miles from his designated post. Gonzales resigned just days after he was caught on camera.
