out shopping for a new light soon.

i'm in a closet, so i needs to be air-cooled for sure

what's better for that application? tube or enclosed air cooled hood? or is there really? it's a 4' x 3.5' closet.

You will find that a nice air cooled hood has a more uniform light pattern over the tops of your plants with less light waisted on the walls of your cabinet or room.

Yeah I agree. I have a cool tube I built myself (no reflector :( ) and if I had the $ I would buy an air cooled hood. They give off a better footprint (buy one that fits your area), are easier to setup, and don't blind you when you look at the light.

This is from my old closet grow 2.5'x2.5'..400W PL Lighting Cool Hood..Award winning Dutch reflectors..
PL has several exchangable reflectors for different foot prints..I think I have the "Deep" reflector..6" duct holes on this one..used a 6" to 4" adapter..
Also threw in how I ducted the closet without cutting..ducted under the door..2 passive & 1 exhaust..could have installed a carbon scrubber filter cannister..I show a cheap carbon filter in the pic..

packnpuff - i was going to ask about the PL lights - the hydro store i'm near sells them. they look NICE, but not as nice as you whole setup. i'm jealous, but at the same time thankful for the great ideas. be expecting a pm from i.

those PL hoods there... that reflector inside is the reflector they use for above highways... award winning? : / i had one of those before, it has hot spots to the sides that's a lot of wasted intensity/light. go for a diff one...

get a Daystar AC from hydrofarm

Daystar's rock, well built, huge footprint and run cool what more can ya ask for? Well I guess they could clean the buckets between runs(damn I hate that job).

Mr.Wags

I also use a daystar AC in my C13. One thing the PL has that the Daystar AC doesn't is better bulb orientation for a C13 or C22 cabinet. On the AC, the bulb is parallel to the air flow and the longer dimension of the hood which makes you have to place it in the cabinet with the bulb and air flow running left to right. That makes for higher light intensity on the center portion of the cabinet. If the bulb was oriented from the front to rear of cabinet, the light would reach the side buds better and I think would increase yield. It’s amazing how much my engineering degree translates into growing better bud!

Mr. Wags - Some Simple Green and your wife's pots and pans scrubber makes short work of cleaning the bin between grows. Trying to keep your grow area clean decreases your chance of problems and decreases your time cleaning with bleach between grows too.

i am making a DIY cooltube and its going to cost me under $25
i think that the argument about wasted light on the walls is legit, but what about putting a reflector above it?
i figure when i get my 400watt hps it will come with a batwing, and if it doesnt then i will buy one, then i will mount it above my cooltube so taht the light reflects downward. if your tight on cash this is a great method.
heres my cooltube. it cost me $5.97

well thats my 2 cents
take it easy guys
and be watchin for my new grow thread starting soon...its gonna be a good time

If nobody mentioned it the depth of the hood is what to consider it would be different for different applications.A deep hood tends to concentrate the light straight downward,I like this for the veg stage when the plants arent as spread out.A shallow hood tends to disperse the light to a wider area instead of concentrating it downward,I like these during the flowering stage

If you wannt a cheap and easy reflector for your cool tube get a vent piece and cut to size, then stick inside the tube. Works perfect and costs about $4

ebbnflow- how can you say its alot of work? transfer your light into the "cooltube" connect some ducting to it. and then that connects to your fan and your done.
if you dont got 120 to drop on a hood or cooltube this is a good/cheap alternative. if your not a lazy ass and have 10mins to spend on it. you cant grow and be lazy. get over it.

i've used both daystar and pl........if i'm not venting i prefer the pl's because to vent with the pl you have to buy an additional box for the light in order to vent..... so if venting choose daystar....hydrofarm makes great products....good luck
