cool tube / lightning question

ok so im trying to figure out how a cool tube works. you attatch the ducting to one side of the glass sort of chamber and make the other end come outside of your cab, and on the other end you attach a fan so it sucks air through the tube to cool the bulb? is that how that works?

and, whats it called where i can use either a MH or a HPS bulb in the same socket? also what is a ballast?

I have my 400w cool tube set up with an open end in the grow cab, on the other end i have ducting out of the cab with a fan on top of the cab connected to the ducting. I have ducted the output of the fan into the loft space. (hope that helps)
You can draw air directly in from outside you grow with a cooltube but if you do then you will need another extraction fan for your grow to provide air exchange(co2) so your plants grow heathly.
The sockets "on say a 400w hps" and mh are the same i believe i think they are called e40 fittings.
As for a ballast i am sure you can find that out reading through the site but basically it powers your light. You can get ballasts that do mh or hps or some do both.

Good luck with your grow!

i think i saw in someones grow room they have like a metal Y connecter, on the single end can i put a say 250cfm fan, and on one of the other ends hook it up to the cool tube, then on the other y put the ducting inside the cab to suck air our from around the plants. and on the bottom near the plants have a couple louvre's so its constandly cycling air and pulling air through the cool tube? is that possible?

do you have any direct shots of cool tubes and how they are set up? thaat would help me out alot.

edit: when i get back from my shower i will draw up a picture of what i am trying to say.

how do i wire in the socket for the bulb? can i cut a hole in the ducting and wire it to a power outlet?

Your drawing is right on the mark, and yes you can cut a small hole in the ducting to run the wires. This is the best picture I have right now I will try to get a better one once the light go out.

thanks man, i would appreciate if you can get some pics of how you wired your cool tube in, that would be really helpful.

edit: i was just thinking, can all of this stuff be fit into a c22?

The only problem i see with that design is if your using a carbon scrubber with that design its going to restrict the flow of air going through the cool tubes

rather than lets say you have 2 fans, 1 with the carbon scrubber attached used as the intake/outake....then aother fan flowing freeing through the cool tubes...and as long as you have the tubes and ducting sealed up no smell will leek out, just push the air through the tubes instead of pulling it incase a leak were to pop up.

if you use that design with a scrubber attached, i dont see how the airflow would be even between them...most of the air will be going through the cool tubes, rathen than the scrubber saying your using one that is.

ill try to find another design to post

i understand what you are saying, i need two seperate fans, one to bring the air through the carbon scrubber so there is no smell, and one to pull air through the cool tube.

what CFM fan should i get to bring air through the cool tube?

what CFM fan should i use to pull air out of the cab and through the carbon scrubber?

how much are these fans going to cost?

i have this sucking air out of my cab. One side (the more powerfull suction side) can be used to draw out air from the cab itself, while the other side (the one with teh outlets, less suction) can be used to help anotehr smaller fan suck air through cool tube. i used one of those duct boosters from HomeDepot and it keeps my glass cool enough for plants to be touching. I only have a 150wat HPS but it still does a damn good job for like $70 bones all together..

approximately how much would a 250w hps be? i dont need the hood i dont think? because i am making a cool tube for it.
