cooking with cannabis?

J

jasondanzig

it is my understanding that in order to get high off weed the temp of the plant must be raised in order to get high, or something. when i used a vaporizer, i would set it at a min of 225*F and a max of 275-300*F, and get stoned.
so to my question, is cooking the ground up cannabis in 250*F sugar going to be enough to cook/ get high with? i do cook on the stove and i will be using a candy thermometer so i can be exact with temps.
thanks everyone

I think you would be fine with your cooking plan. Heating it first is the key.

"Decarboxylation
by Ed Rosenthal (22 Jul, 2003)

When marijuana is harvested, the THC molecule is bound to a carboxyl group – COOH – that is, one atom each of carbon and hydrogen and two atoms of oxygen. With a carboxyl group attached, THC is not active.

Heating dried marijuana makes the carboxyl group convert into water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). When marijuana is smoked, the burning eliminates the carboxyl group. There are several ways to decarboxylate marijuana for use in extracts. A layer of marijuana buds or leaf can be placed in an oven at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. This is far below the boiling point of THC yet warm enough to evaporate the carboxyl group. Another method of releasing the COOH is by placing a bowl of buds in the microwave for 2 minutes. The waves will boil away the water. The boiling point of marijuana's active cannabinoids ranges from 260-392 degrees F."

decarboxlating the molecule only changes the high, and also aids in absorption.. do some more research and youll find that your liver decarboxylates thc as well.. i.e. raw works too

You are completely right. I'm sorry if my post came off as mightier than thou. It's true that the liver does decarboxylate. My liver can't process enough for me so I help it along. I would have to eat so much raw weed I'd feel quite ill. When I make cannabrex caps raw just won't work for me.

oh nah man its cool, i just hate the heating myth I dont have a clue where it comes from. thats pretty interesting about metabolizing it actually.. ive been trying to figure out why some people get sick from raw/some people get very little effect from it too.. i guess its just metabolisms and really the differences in peoples individual physiology.

the only reason i don't immediately recommend heating is because it does change the high and taste. furthermore its entirely possible to destroy and degrade thc and other active cannabinoids with temperatures around 250.. as was discussed. 250 is hot enough to vaporize a lot of fun essential oils so time spent at that temperature is important.. i would try to minimize its exposure to harsh heats if at all possible.
