conversion bulbs

I've just started a new cabinet grow after being outdoors the last couple years and I'm trying to remember what my bulb situation is. I thought I have a HPS mag ballast with a MH conversion bulb. I've noticed at the stores you can have it the other way around - MH ballast and HPS conversion bulb. Is there some way to tell what the ballast is about? The nameplate doesn't really say anything. I bought it about 6 years ago if that makes any difference.

My parts list shows that as a 400w HPS unit. Pays to be an old fart that never throws away anything huh?

STP is the code for a power pack
400 is wattage
LX is High Pressure Sodium
UNV is universal bulb position
8 is for multi tap ballasts

So you have a 400w HPS multitap ballast there.

For future reference:
STP = power pack
WBG = highbay unit
First 2 numbers if present = reflector size for highbay units
###= wattage of lamp
Next two letters = lamp type (MA = metal halide, LX = high pressure sodium, PMA = Pulse Start Metal Halide)
Third letter if present = B (hot restrike capability)
last number following the dash = voltage options. 5= 480v, 8= multitap.

There are a TON of other options in the last 3 letters before the dash (your UNV = universal lamp position), most are related to accessories that come with a highbay or fusing setup. You can get a chain that's huge, but basically says something like "this lamp came with a reflector, a cord, fuses, and a mounting bracket".

Wow, I'm impressed too. Thanks for digging that up, just what I needed to know. Which is just what I thought but, being an old fart, couldn't remember.
