I use an 18/6 cycle preflowers are just a part of natural growth,it happens with most plants but not all.Dont think they will just jump out at you after 3 or 4 weeks either, get a good magnifying glass and look real close,I can usually tell around the 4th week. Some may take longer and some may never show at all,but most do if you look close enough

I used to veg my plants 24/0 and preflowers never showed up. Then i decided to veg with 18/6 and BAM! Preflowers showed up just 2 weeks later.

Hello DS,

Umm- there is no "best" of any method in here- there are only opinions.

I use the 18/6 because of energy concerns and it is more a natural cycle. I used to use 24/0 but saw no real benifit.

For flower the concensus is a 12/12 cycle. But as with all methods there are those that do off the wall timing schedules.

What I have been finding is use what works best for you. As in my case, there is a learning curve and time to find what it is that does work. Least for me.

Read, enjoy relax and learn.

About the only exception to what Minds_I stated that I can think of is if you have an extremely sativa plant, you might need to use 14h of darkness to trigger flowering...then after a couple of weeks switch it back to 12/12.

I use 18/6 and 12/12 for all mine tho since I don't keep any heavy sativas...

I've found all the strains I've started under a 18/6 light schedule show preflowers after about 4 weeks from poppin the soil. I never really thought about it before this thread but I don't think I ever got preflowers using 24/0 ever.

I just got one of MODs freebies Arjan's Haze #2 x NL5 Haze which is a very heavy sativa to show preflowers at about 4 weeks of 18/6.

so keeping my plants on a 18/6 cycle will be good til flowering? whats the general rule about preflowering to sex with a 12/12 cycle then going back to a 18/6 to veg longer...

If you're using an 18/6 light cycle for veg they will more than likely show their sex without switching to 12/12 in about a month. Switching back and forth between light cycles opens up the possibility of inducing hermaphrodites and I won't ever do it. You're better off taking cuttings from the plant and putting the cuttings on a 12/12 cycle immediately to determine sex.

Hello DS,

You could do that but in doing so stresses the plant which may in turn lead to hermorphidism (sp).

You could take a cutting and place it on 12/12 but that takes a week or two and you lose the growth of the plant by removing the cutting in the first place.

Just be patient and they will show sex for you.

The general rule of thumb is that plants will show preflowers from 4 - 6 weeks after they pop up from the soil. It has to do with the age of the plant....if the plant is growing normally then around the 4th or 5th node you will begin to see preflowers in the notch between the main stem & the fan leaf's stem. And like someone else said, you'll need a magnifier of some kind. The males preflowers will tend to be a roundish bump that sometimes is on a stalk. The females will be more pear shaped with one or two white hairs poking out the top. The hairs are the dead giveaway they're fems.
Forget about 12/12 until you are sure you are ready for the plant to go into flower.

Hope this helps ya out.

There's that old diagram.....thanks Bipedalhominid....

Right, so after 30 days on an 18/6 cycle, some of the plants will show a white, wispy
hair which is the female pre-flower. The male plants will not show this white, wispy
hair and sorta have more of a spike-like structure at the internodes. Some plants
might not show any pre-floral traits until you switch to 12/12, so to be absolutely sure
it is best to wait until 12/12 when the real sexual structures begin to show up.....

People prefer to kill the males and to identify the females for cloning.....even after a
week of 12/12 you can still take female clones, but that's another story and not
really relevant to this topic......

Does any of this help? Are you satisfied with the responses in this thread?

:ying: kind regards from your friend the guineapig :ying:
