confused about led for veg

i've vegged plants for several years - i know cfl's work great for the veg period but i'm just tired of adjusting them and also the heat they give off.

i was thinking California LW 100 and sent a message stating it would be for veg only. they replied that the Solarstorm 110 is not a stand alone unit and i would need to 220.

wouldn't a 110w be okay for veg? i'm confused.

Yes 110 would work fine. LED are a bit different. Go by PAR readings. Remember they promote short node length. Everyone I've veg with LED comes out bushyore than normal

that's what i was hoping to hear! thanx

Your probably not going to want to hear this but I cant see spending Solarstorm money just to veg plants. Disclaimer: I flower with 2 SS400's. I veg with a GH Blackstar. Much cheaper light and just as effective in Veg. I had the smaller Solarstorm before the two 400's and sent it back. ROI just not there, as it didn't improve my veg cycle.

end of response, opinion below

A note about SolarStorms, to date I have never had a "great grow" with a Solarstorm, which I just think is weird. So I'm really not at all sold on their lights at this point. Additionally, their UV-B bulbs have too short a life, considering they blew out during the third grow and were only on three weeks each grow. Also this is right about the time the fan leaves start to yellow almost overnight and the plant starts dropping leaves daily (Kali Mist).

Many grow with the the UV-Bon the whole flower cycle, so I have reached the point that I'm clueless as to why this is happening. Nutes were different each grow, Dynagrow (Meh), GPN, and AN. Final bloom boosters went from none to Hammerhead + M.O.A.B. so . . . no idea?

CFLs are wasteful, get T8 or T5HO tubes.

The SolarFlare 100/110 only come in Veg or Bloom models while the 200/220 can also be had in a general purpose spectrum.

I have a pair of SolarFlare 100 Bloom for supplemental and they were a fair price--for LED--at growershouse (on sale). Note: actual power draw is about 80W.

Edit after reading Po's post: I don't know if my supplemental SolarFlares did any good because the plants were pretty much saturated with Lumigrow LED photons. I really bought them to match up with my old Procyon 125 that I never used.

110 and 220 refer to what kind of outlets are used for the power source. Typically in residential areas 220 outlets are only found in a kitchen or laundry room, sometimes in workshops or garages. When it's convenient to do so growers will use special devices that plug into a 220 connection and then that gives the grower the ability to break that up into multiple lines each on their own timers.

So if they are telling you it's 220 only you're going to need to give it access to a 220 outlet. Otherwise you need to find one that is 110 or 120v.

If you want to pick something for veg only your biggest number concern should be for color temperature. Vegging is best done under a more blue spectrum light whereas flowering is best done under red spectrum light. The cooler the temperature the more blue spectrum it is. Often described as cool white or bright white. Red spectrum light has a more yellow appearance and is usually describe as warm white.
