Common and not so common grower mistakes

Repeat 1000 x over, daily.
Sadly some of you will soon be in jail with plenty of time to remember "when Don C posted that"

Almost all busts happen because of this.

As for "not so common"

"I do not need to read the book again"

"But I thought I plugged in again"

"I don't know how that came loose"

"I swear I turned it off" Hoses come to mind, I have become a dab hand at replastering ceilings.....

"I trusted him/her"

"I should have never opened the door"

"I did not have a backup plan"

"I never thought it would leak"

"I thought they were good seeds"

"it looked female" Depending on your location, this can apply to more than plants.

"I bet dese lil jits couldn't tell you who da mayor is
But dey could tell who niggas on dem 26"s is"

3rd rule of Grow Club is: never put anything grow related in the trash.

ODOR CONTROL

I believe we all become used to our environment. I know when I leave for a weekend and come home, I can smell the grow in my house. We make sure not to have anyone over till we get that fixed.

I always shower and change clothes after spending time in the grow room.

Be careful of taking items in public that may smell. I think my vacuum sealer smells. What about the guy who paid his property taxes with stinky money? I'll alway remember that.

Dont do weird things like running hoses out of the house to drain your res.

Make sure electrical is on point

I have heard of neighbours calling the water board because the nft grow next door sounded like a water leak.

On the growing side, we leave it alone during 12/12 so problems with the timer or contactor can go undetected for many days. A contactor problem nearly always results in lights permanently on.

I've wired my contactor so that the lights are on when the timer of off. This means that the relay coil pulls the contacts apart and it's a lot stronger than the spring so a small weld doesn't hold.

Also, I've ran an extension lead from the ballast socket to my computer desk. When the lights come on, the neon lights and I can see it's off when the lights should be off.

If you live in the Snow Zone... for the love of God don't be dumping your used dirt outdoors in winter! That's what hydroton is for...

On that note, if you dump used dirt in the compost or garden, you might wanna check for 'volunteers' once a week. I am not good with garden maintenance, and went out to do my 'once a month whether they need it or not' weeding on my fennel patch... and found a 2-foot bitch squatting in amongst the herbs. Gives a new meaning to 'weeding'. Sneaky little fuckers.

Whatever you do, be nice to your neighbors. If they suspect something, they will make your life hell if they already hate you. Guy a couple hours from me got busted by his neighbors calling in 'gunshots fired' (no gun or casings found) at his addy; cops arrived at what was then a crime scene to do a check, and found that his koi breeding business hid a commercial grow that had been operating happily for a decade or more. Moral is, if their lawn guy dumps clippings on your side of the fence... IGNORE IT.

Speaking from experience are we? lol - Crazies can be an issue.

Speaking of which...

If you are a single guy/girl, don't tell the people that you are dating/fucking/cheating with/on. If you are married - don't mess around on your spouse. And DON'T have a shitload of traffic in and out. That's just a huge red flag that stupid people tend to not be able to see. I know who's dealing in my neighborhood, pretty easy to see. No job (mentioned above), decent cars, you always coming/going, "friends" always coming/going.

Growing isn't so plain to see, but very easy to smell. Like Yamaha said above, it's really easy to get used to the constant smell in the environment. I couldn't smell a thing, but my mom came in and said "what smells like skunk?" We were able to pass it off on the dog. Spend the money to get good odor protection. I'm going to use a can and an O3 machine this time around.

Heat loss from the space - huge one anymore with FLIR getting cheaper and more compact. Supreme Court ruling my ass, they do it and then look for an excuse. Keep your grow away from exterior walls. Try to vent the heat into the cold air return (might mess up your a/c in summer time though) so that the heat can go throughout the whole house. One really bright spot on your foundation or exterior wall, you're giving them what they're looking for. Big one for basement growers. If you watched the DEA show with the FLIR footage, their foundation was lit right up compared to the neighbors'.

Also, another thing that's been making me hesitant in getting going again. My neighbor keeps a couple plants outside behind his garage which isn't too far from my house. Anyone have experience with this?

I've broken down two grows so far, for different but similar sets of reasons.
Both locations' reasons for being 'blown up' were complicated (=too many variables), but one included that the neighbor was dealing, and the other included that the neighbor was growing. Both were multi-family homes, and the LAST thing I needed was to be included in a conspiracy charge to produce/sell plants I wasn't even fucking involved with...

Keep yourself cleaned up; ditto the yard; do a walk around once a week, at night

order you winter nutes/soil/supplies in the middle of summer
