So I'm about 4 minutes into "Jupiter" off of Interstellar Space, and I swear I just can't take it anymore. I have to close my eyes, and let Trane and Rashied just take over, feel the rising energy rush through me like the first flash of a mushroom journey, until the sound ceases to be 'music' and becomes pure, molten understanding... as direct and complete a channel of communication as I've ever experienced from another human being. The man finally figured out how to open himself up completely, how to get to all those things inside he had been chasing with all those notes for all those years. He had to abandon everything he knew and believed about music in order to discover what it truly was all about. He basically took what everyone knew to be "John Coltrane", the songs, the melodies, the sonorities, and completely destroyed it, leveled it, in order to get to and express the deeper things inside. I'm so glad he decided to be a pioneer of his own soul rather than playing what people wanted him to play. The fact that this musical document even exists makes my life a much richer place. It's worth every bit of the challenge.
Something very profound happened that day in 1967. I wonder if Trane knew it was going to be his final session?
