MTSU student accused of paying rent with marijuana proceeds: police
By Lisa Marchesoni, Post senior writer - April 17, 2007 - 3:44 PM

An MTSU student paid her rent with proceeds from alleged drug sales while two day care teachers apparently accepted a package with more than 26 pounds of marijuana, a Murfreesboro vice supervisor said.

Student Anna Mooney, 20, of 826 N. Spring St. Apartment C was charged with felony possession of marijuana after vice detectives and crime suppression unit officers confiscated 174.9 grams of hydroponic marijuana from her apartment, said Vice Detective Lt. Nathan McDaniel.

During the investigation, Mooney told police she “found out I could pay my rent with it,” McDaniel said. Hydroponic marijuana sells for about $400 per ounce.

Detectives learned about Mooney through a CrimeStoppers tip. They watched her home several days before talking to her. McDaniel, Sgt. Cary Gensemer and Officer Jacoby O’Gwynn approached Mooney who denied selling drugs.

She gave consent to search her apartment, McDaniel said. The officers seized about six ounces of marijuana grown in water without soil, $1,542 cash and a .32-caliber handgun. She was also charged with possession of a handgun.

Mooney is unemployed. Her hearing is set July 18 in General Sessions Court.

In another case, Stephanie Johnson-Wade, 22, and Jamese “Mimi” Waters, 19, both of D63 Rosewood Apartments on 1606 N. Tennessee Blvd. were charged with felony possession of more than 10 pounds of marijuana and conspiracy to deliver and sell marijuana.

Johnson-Wade is a teacher at Stones River Day School while Waters is a day care teacher at Creative Learning.

Detectives were contacted about the suspicious package. Murf, the K-9 trained to sniff out narcotics, indicated illegal drugs in the box. Working with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Service, a federal search warrant was obtained to search the box.

“We opened the box and found a big block of marijuana that weighed 26.3 pounds,” McDaniel said.

After the marijuana was delivered, detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment. Both women were arrested. Their hearings were set May 15 in General Sessions Court.

fucked up shit, some 20 yr old college student is going to get her life fucked because she was growing weed to pay her rent. There are a lot more harmful occupations..............the worst part? It was a crimestoppers tip, some nosy neighbor or angry customer ratted her out. damn rats

yeah i'm in on that too, the only bad thing she did was give them consent to search her place, i would told them to get lost without a warrant...also people should know better than to send 25 pounds of pot through the mail, or u better be goddamned professional about sealing and shipping it...tennessee is a really shitty place to get busted too, sucks to be those folks...

The story is confusing, it doesn't actually mention whether or not she was growing, and if she wasn't growing it in her apartment, how the hell would they know how it was grown, hell i'll call bullshit right now on any member here that can tell how a sample bud was grown, much a less a cop being able to tell without even smoking it.

yeah it's kinda' wierd how some people on here find selling a little bit of weed so taboo, umm you guys ever here about counterculture & the black market? I'm glad the market exists otherwise more people in the states would be government controlled sheeple. This site is funded by money derived from "dealing" seeds, why do the anti-dealers flock to a site openly funded in such a way, isn't there a yahoo club for you guys.

If it wasn't for the 20 yearold girl with 6oz of weed, a lot of the posters wouldn't even be on a site like this.

Her crime of possession or intent to distribute won't get her in anywhere near as much trouble as possession of a handgun. This is a favorite tactic of cops. Even if the gun was safely stored in a drawer and you have a permit for it, you can be charged with the use of a handgun in the commission of a crime. To me, that is unconstitutional, as we are given the right to bear arms. The fact that she owned it doesn't mean that she used it.

The kind that thinks some proverbial big fish will consider her an easy target? From the sounds of it the gun was in her home, if she'd been caught walking around with it that'd be slightly different.

What's it matter that she was growing(or dealing w/e) to pay her rent? She was simply caught growing. Doesn't matter what for... " JOHN DOE WAS CAUGHT GROWING SO HE COULD PAY HIS CAR PAYMENT!"

But yeah, fuck nosey neighbors!

she was indeed growing, the article sucks

The reason I feel bad about her situation as opposed to john doe is because growing was a way to finance her higher education (something I believe should be accessible to all, not just those fortunate enough to afford it). Now she is most likely going to be thrown into the justice system and have to wade through all the bullshit to just get back to square one. Doesnt seem right

plus as others pointed out, without dealers no one would have any smoke, gotta give credit where credit is due

The difference is one is a basic human need. The other is optional.

The gun could've been for practice shooting, personal protection, whatever... I love guns, especially .45's...

I think its fucked up how if you legally own a clean gun, which is anyones right as an American, that it can be held against you if you're caught growing, dealing or whatever.

Meds and the right to own a legal firearm are two totally different ballparks. They should not be put together. Ive got meds in my house, and just like jewelry, money or anything else of value, including my life, I have the right to protect them.

Its just another bullshit stereotype that when you put drugs and guns together, you must be a criminal and go to jail... Bullshit, Ive got the right to smoke, and "SHOULD" have the right to smoke your sorry thieving ass should you be fucking stupid enough to UNLAWFULLY enter my home and attempt stealing from me.
