Cohen proposes wait period for ‘shrooms

Cohen proposes wait period for ‘shrooms
12 September 2007

THE HAGUE (AFP) - A new proposal from the mayor of Amsterdam is sure to be considered a bummer by certain visitors to the Dutch city: a three-day waiting period to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Mayor Job Cohen wants to require the wait period to allow mushroom buyers to fully understand exactly what it is they are purchasing, ANP news agency reported Tuesday.

The proposal seeks to prevent impulse purchases and follows several incidents that have occurred in the city involving tourists who have eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms.

In March, a 17-year-old French girl killed herself by jumping from a bridge in the city after having eaten mushrooms.

Under the proposal, potential mushroom buyers would have to show identity papers when visiting one of the "smart shops" where they are sold in the famously tolerant city.

They would then be given a card with the date listed on it, as well as fliers with information on the mushrooms.

Three days later, the mushrooms could be collected.

The mayor detailed the proposal in a letter to Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink, ANP said.

probably one of the most retarted things ever.... first of all if you are intending on buying mushrooms you probably know that you want them.. secondly, if your eating enough mushrooms to jump off a bridge, your not thinking about the 3 days and the flyers that you just read about shrooms.

all this will accomplish is some unwashed scumbag waiting outside every head shop in Am'dam whispering " pssst, wannna buy some mushrooms?"

..goodbye quality, choice, service and sensible advice, hello to ripoffs and crappy quality

this type of proposal should be fought every inch of the way as it is just another knee high, black leather clad goosestep further towards an ending of personal choice and freedom.

do they have age limits for mushies?....if not, they should..a 17 year old should not be allowed to buy mushies.

and if they have this type of knee jerk reaction to the unfortunate death of one underage tourist..then in all fairness they should do the same for alcohol which is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of more tourists in Holland (traffic accidents, murders, alc o/d etc)

and in 99.99% of these cases where cannabis or mushrooms are accused to be responsible for the death someone (let's keep in mind that prescription pills killed 15,000 Americans last year!) ...often the media do not tell the whole story, instead choosing to zero in on just one headline grabbing mitigating factor in the incident "drug!"....for example did this French girl have a history of multiple suicide attempts?, was she drunk on alcohol..or was it just a plain old accident..she slipped and fell?....

accidents happen to many tourists and locals every day in any city..I wonder how many tourists get flattened by a tram each and every day?..perhaps there should be a 3 day waiting period for pedestrians in Amsterdam as well?

Mushrooms should be sold in the same way as alcohol.....only to adults.

another example of the dutch policy of fix it even when it is not broken, some tourist got bombed on alchohol and fell in the canal and drowned, maybe there should be a three day wait to get a beer

Exactly mr.haze, thats a real bummer :( its really idiotic, how about a test of somekind lol "do you know your psychedelics?" kind of test lmao

1. Have you eaten mushrooms before?

Yes No

2. Are you sure you want to eat mushrooms again?

Yes No

3. What are the effects of mushrooms?

Good Bad Happy

And so on...lol oh yeah and to fix the problem I'd just make perfectly sure that only grown up people have access to mushrooms, not teenagers, but thats a bit of utopia im thinking of..

if you think this is crazy, wait til july 1st when the smoking ban starts, no smoking in bars, restaurants, smoking only in coffeeshops. blocked off areas for dealers and service people. talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg. these politicians are clueless.

Well that sounds pretty reasonable, I always thought that shelling out mushrooms like that can´t be good. I mean, doing them can be good for you but one must understand that they are not something you take just to have some fun but a powerful tool shaping who you are. And at least they´re not banning the stuff. And at the very least, checking ID´s is good.

edit: good points though, laws like this are not going to solve problems, if there are some, but they can make some people realize what they are about to ingest.

Freedom first, but.......

Freedom first, but.......

if people were more responsible, ther would have been no call for a change to the existing legislation. I think the kicker was all the OD's on Mushies that occurred at roughly the same time. The Danish Jumper... The French jumper, and The Tourist who, at a campground, decided it was a good idea to spin around on the grounds in his vehicle, and do "Doughnuts," as we say in the Wild West, narrowly missing several campers.

Acts like these cause laws to change. Can;t blame 'em for changing them.
