Coffee filter germ method dried - what can I do?

Hey guys,

Ive been germing some seeds using the coffee filter method. I've planted 6 seeds so far, but last night the coffee filter dried after the cap on the container came off.

One of the seeds has grown a pretty substantial tail, which looked dry. The others have yet to crack or are only showing a very small tail.

Anyways, do you think these are a lost cause (especially the yet-to-crack beans?) I'd like to save them if possible. If not, I'll start germing some extra Mazar-i-Sherif freebies

Thanks!

All you can do is try to rejuv them.

get each into soil as soon as the shell cracks, the root hairs can grow into paper if you let them - so I don't let them get very far.

I use paper towel covered with plastic food wrap and set on my monitor. I chek on them after 24 hrs and again at about 36 and 48 - most are popped by then. I'm about 49 for 50 so far.

knock on wood.

ohhhh and while you may not find this tidbit particulal=rly rewarding at the moment,, I learn a hella lot more from my misteakes than my successes.

I failed a lotta grows - and still have the ocassional issues.

Don't stop trying.

Thanks man. It does help. I've fucked up more grows than is forgivable, but yeah, learn something each time.

The beans actually look better now that I've rewet them. At worst I lose 4 beans, mostly lowryder, and get to throw the Mazar-I-Sharif into the mix.

Thx!

After concidering the use of coffee filters- - I can see where a coffeefilter os a much denser and less permiable fiber than paper towel - and as such, has some advantages over paper towels, however - I like the moisture retention of paper towel MUCH better.

There are advantages to both. I think with paper towels - it is imparative to go to soil very early - sprouts form tiny hairs that grow into the paper towel fiber - I have best success when the sprouts are less than 1/4" exposed (about 6mm)

watering is really important also - less can be better. Canabis does better to get to almost droopy dry. And little ones are very sensitive. Easy does it.

I scuffed my seeds with sandpaper, just a few light scrapes against some smaller grained paper, don't be too hard.... Then I float them in ph'd water over night. if they haven't sank I try to sink them with my finger, if they sink then they are ready to go. Plant them point down just below the surface and wait for them to pop. I have also planted them in rapid rooters which works too but not any better then planting them right in the medium. I've had pretty good success with this method even with some older seeds i've had. GL

why do you scuff them with sandpaper??

anyways, i just drop them in in a dark cup with warm water.. make sure they all sink, sometimes takes awhile. the ones that never sink wont germ.
usually in 24 hours or so it pops then i put directly in soil

ive done the papertowel method before. worked allright i suppose but papertowl tended to dry out too fast

The sandpaper will help the water get through the skin of the seed. Seems to help them get out faster IMO. Some people use a matchbox with a layer of sandpaper on the bottom, put seeds in and shake them a bit. Sometimes the shell is hard for the seed to get through, I've seen breeders on this site recommend doing it so I gave it a try and I must say I like the results.

Jst a hint wrap a paper towel around the coffee filter, Hold's moisture a little longer.

I find that Cotton Balls Are the best because they seem to hold alot more water then a papertowel that is thiner. seems the ptowel dRies alot quicker then a Cotton ball IME.
