Coconut Oil .....How hot is too hot ? ? ? ?

Hello everyone....thanks for looking.......

I am wanting to make a cannabis infused coconut oil and I don't want to make a mistake and set my over temperature too high as to loose any of my precious potency............

I am using a gas oven and will be mixing pre-ground buds with coconut oil inside of a sealed oven safe pyrex container.........

I am wanting to use the oil for making capsules and also for cooking edibles........

Thanks for any help......:thank you:

The first thing I found says coconut oil has a smoke point of 350f for unrefined, and 450f for refined, which is hotter than you'd want to use when infusing, so you should be good on that point.

I was actually just searching through threads about this, I'm very curious what oil would be most efficient to use for canna oil. I was thinking about coconut oil but didn't see too much info on it...

CC - Where is the confusion? Why wouldn't you make the infusion with coconut oil like any other canna oil?

Coconut oil? How do you intend to extract the oil exactly?

I don't.......I am hoping that the THC will be present and potent throughout the small amount of coconut oil used while heating............

Are you sure you don't mean coconut milk? Coconut cream? Coconut juice?

Just curious. "

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

thank you for your reply

I was confused (and I'm still confused) regarding the term 'coconut oil' as it relates to the specific product garnered from a coconut.

'Coconut juice' is not 'coconut oil' by any stretch of the imagination. Coconut 'milk' and/or coconut 'cream' is a manufactured product derived from 'coconut juice'

The mystery to me was/is the term 'coconut oil' - nothing more.

coconut oil is sold in the cooking oil section...i found some at walmega store.

under 75 degrees it forms solid...looks like crisco.

you can make the BEST popcorn with it.

Thanks for the replies fellas.........
Does anyone know the safest maximum temperature without causing any degradation ? ? ? ? ?

thanks again

don't really know, but I see around 320degrees Farenheit is about as hot as most recipes say to go.

Why not put it in a crock pot on low and let it steep overnite like budder?

p.s. That coconut oil is delicious, but it is soo fattening. It will fatten me like a hog if I ate it... ;)

to CC: Coconut oil is made when the flesh of the coconut is cold pressed with a machine. It is simple to making olive oil in process.

It has a really high calorie count though.

I don't reckon anything could hide the flavor of weed better than coconut oil though... good idea.

I'm curious how the brownie mixes that call for oil will come out with coconut oil... might have to do a trial run to see how the taste/quality is.

Virgin coconut oil's smoke point is 350 degrees F. Do not let the oil start smoking, because it will degrade and stink up your house (and your end product will stink). THC bonds to fat molecules at around 325 to 355 degrees F, so maintain the heat at just under the point at which the oil starts to smoke.

Personally I would use a mixture of water and coconut oil heated just to a simmer for 30 mins. This way you don't have to worry about the oil hitting the smoke point.

Thanks to everyone for the replies......

LolaGal, Thanks you for the suggestion of putting my coconut oil and pre-ground cannabis mixture into a crock pot to allow it to be heated the easy way..........
I have no problem with that method at all. I too prefer simplicity.......
But, I am really trying to figure out if the "heat" is actually necessary or if it simply speeds along the process......

darklands, Thank you for all of the information and your suggestion too.....

Appreciated.........

from the net:
222/+: Decarboxylation (Carboxyl groups removed)
325-355: THC bonds to fat molecules
355-392: THC boils (vaporizes; avoid this temperature)

So, if THC needs to be heated to between 325-355 degrees in order to bond with the fat within the coconut oil........and the boiling point of refined coconut oil is 350 degrees........it sounds like the temperature has to be at least 325 but less than 350.........

Sounds like a good time to use the hand held infrared thermometer and make sure the oven temperatures on the gas oven I plan to use are accurate....

An infrared thermometer would really help. I've been considering getting one just for this purpose. I hope you post your results.

I mix cannabis or bho with coconut oil, and decarboxylate in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes. Then I mix with corn starch and put into gel caps. Works fantastic for me...

if temps of 325-355 are need to bond THC to fat, how does that happen if you are cooking the bud in coconut oil/water (in crock pot or on the stove) while keeping the water/oil combo at just below boiling at 212?
